I thought you weren't allowed to put a newer plate on an older car?
You aren't, but if it's never been registered then it's new as far as the DVLA care.
Case in point used to be owned by a PH'r on here Lotus Omega 0375D

R reg Lotus Carlton (Omega)

So that's 1997 registered on a car that stopped production in 1992

I've seen an X reg (2000/2001) Escort estate about recently which I thought was a bit odd as the Focus replaced it in 1998.

I was in front of an Evo 10 this morning on a 64 plate. I had no idea they were still making them, or still being registered.

That's not that unusual as the escort was sold along side the focus as the cheap option (like the Clio campus) until 2000 so only a year or so after production ended

Can't remember who it was but I'm sure one PHer had a Porsche 964 on a 51 plate due to a DVLA mix up

I did work experience for two weeks in June/July 1999 at the local VW dealer. One of my tasks was to screw dealer backing plates on the front and back of twenty MK III Golfs that had been registered at the start of the year on 'S' plates and had been brought into stock.

They were South African built and were finished in Audi colours.

I have read on the internet that there is a red Lupo GTI on an 07 plate. Reason was that the roof was damaged by the transporter on/during delivery. Where it was sat for two years before being registered ... who knows.
I had one of the twenty that came over, I worked at the VW head office in Milton Keynes it had a VR6 interior and aircon as standard. When they swopped out the cassette player for a UK spec CD player, they discovered it had an internal alarm and had to stick it in a bucket at the end of the yard till the battery gave up lol

Yup, they did run-out models called Flight and Finesse. My grandparents had a W-reg Finesse. Escort vans were still being churned out until 2002 IIRC.

Similar with the Peugeot 306. Hatch production stopped around 2000, but estates and cabrios were often seen on 52 plates.

Sure I've seen a few P-reg Peugeot 205s as well.

So this car I happened across, a 51 plate E36 330i Sport, didn't have an unusual plate at all. What was odd was that I was following it in a Mustang down the Las Vegas strip two years ago. RHD too. Stood out a mile!

When I was a member of the MR2 owners club, there was a lady local me who owned an "N" reg MR2 Mk I.

The car had been bought by a collector in 1989, but wasn't registered. It was the put into dry storage until it was then register and sold in 1995.

I had a Corrado VR6 registered in March 1996 on an N plate, even though the Corrado VR6 went out of production in 1995. But I guess that's just run-out stock registration.

I still wonder what that was doing there. And it was an E46.

A 51 plate is bang on for an E46. I had an E46 330i Touring on a 51 plate. But I agree the location was unusual. smile

There was/is a B5 model Audi RS4 around on a 04-plate - these were produced between 2000 and 2002.

The back story to this is the car was stolen from a London dealer before it could be registered, and not recovered for almost two years - so only registered in 2004.
