I would of course disagree, having spoken to some 635d and 535d owners it seems that the economy that is claimed is dam near impossible to get and you have the added advantage having a petrol in that you don't have to listen to a diesel. ....and this is coming from someone who used to have an M6 V10.

Here is a photo of my 650i during a recent tour of Europe which covered France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark and Norway.
Averaged 31 mpg from London and back with a few great runs on the German autobahns too. Really cannot fault these cars, even the mpg is great for the power and not too far off a 2.5 straight 6 E46 coupe I owned a few years ago which only managed 35 on a run.
Great picture and a great looking car! How do you find the panoramic roof?Averaged 31 mpg from London and back with a few great runs on the German autobahns too. However the lack of low down torque was sometimes a hinderance. In that respect it was not a very 'elastic' engine in the same way the 635D has.

There's absolutely no reason to buy the 635d unless you're doing mega miles and don't want to keep piling fuel into the V8!
That's from a current 550i and ex 335d owner.

The M6 only makes sense if you can max it - which of course you can't in the UK.
The 635D you can use more of its performance more of the time. Dare I also say it but its probably faster in day to day situations. The gearbox is also miles better too.
Of course, take both on a country road and the 635D would not see which way the M6 went (I did 140mph in mine once on a back country road) but in the real world the 635D makes more sense. Much more sense.
We can agree to disagree. That is what being a petrolhead is all about!

The 635d engine is identical but is carrying more weight with the 6 series, which I'm assuming will be lighter than the 550 Touring.. Which in my head at least must make the 650 a lot stronger than the 635d.
Gearbox in both are the same.

I would agree, real world mixed MPG in the 650i is going to 20-25 at best.......and this is coming from someone who used to have an M6 V10.
I'm currently averaging 36 in my 335d
10-15 MPG extra translates into 50% less fuel at the pump!
Some good lease deals on the new 640d... Must be a fantastic engine

Not only do diesel drivers drive cars with st engines, it seems they're also crap at maths!I'm currently averaging 36 in my 335d

I am definitely not against diesels having owned a fair few my self but comparing the 635d to the 650i is blasphemy. The diesel engine in that car was made to sell the car to non enthusiasts. This is pistonheads isn't it?
If you want the 'few' extra miles per gallon then get the 630i. The facelift 3 litre petrol has near the same mpg stats as the diesel with the same acceleration albeit with a much better sound track.

I picked my 645 up in Jan for a bargain as an impulse buy. Complete poverty spec with zero options, but it makes me love it even more as there's less things that can break!
Mine's a manual 'box too, which just makes it pretty much the perfect car for me right now. I sold my 997.2 C2S last year to fund a house move so needed something vaguely quick and fun, and the 645 ticks all the boxes. The gearshift is one of the better ones I've used once you pop the M gearknob onto it to shorten the throw (very jealous of the guys in the US that had the M6 with a manual option!), and it's a great car to hustle. I've changed the exhaust for something a little louder too, but that's it.
I never expected to enjoy running a silver BMW so much, and as a first step into V8 ownership for me I think it's proving itself to be a great car.

The E63 M6 with the manual gearbox was never really very good for all intents and purposes. It didn't suit the nature of the engine at all.
A 7 speed speed DCT would have been perfect but at the time only the single clutch SMG3 was available.
I believe that S85 V10 with a 7 speed DCT box would have been as close to perfection as possible.

I was shocked when it came out, I just could not wrap my head around the styling. I hated it until one day last summer when I saw one with the sports pack and it hit me like a brick...the car looks absolutely AMAZING! This has never happened to me before, a 10 year old design that I loathe and with age I finally understand. TIt just looks so damned poised and agressive, with oodles of character. I used to love the Audi A5, but now in comparison I think the A5 is just a bit boring (still beautifully proportioned though).
I love the e63 and am actively looking for the rare 650i with a manual transmission.

I had a 650i for a few months towards the start of the year. Great car, but (as silly as it sounds) I could not get along with the lack of a cupholder and there not really being any decent options for one.
So I sold it and replaced it with a 750i.
Same engine, very different kettle of fish. I'm now looking to move the 750i on (but not much interest, annoyingly, as I need it gone ASAP) as it's being replaced with a LEAF - so going from basically one extreme to the other!
Awesome engine though, awesome cars.
If anyone wants a Dension Gateway adapter incidentally, I have one that I installed into my 650i - it's the Gateway 500S BT model so has Bluetooth Audio capabilities as well - very handy. It just replaces the CD changer (although it includes a little gizmo that you can use to "bypass" the Dension box which re-enables the CDC.)
