Striking! But (imo) certainly not a looker! There's one in the carpark in work currently, and it looks alright, but huge! Not sure about the MPG though

4.5 S petrol engine, 2006, under 100k miles for £9935 (I'm sure you'd get the £8k + your Punto to add up)

What sort of running costs are we talking for 130 vs 545? I'm probably going to be in a similar market to the OP soon, to scratch an itch. Would the PH collective reckon it's going to be roughly proportional to the number of cylinders?
OP I'd expect to require a decent sized contingency fund if you go for a big engined, big car. I note your budget of £8k.
Not to your exacting requirements, but you did ask for inspiration

The world's your oyster with those requirements; you have the choice of just about every hot hatch, sport saloon and four-seat GT that falls into budget.
If it was me, I'd be trying to hunt down a nice E46 M3 but there's plenty of other options.

Ok, it's not pretty. But something doesn't need to be to look good.
Something that doesn't blend into the scenery must be a looker.
300C is definitely a polariser. Not for me, but I can see the appeal of the powertrain.
The 545i running costs aren't huge, from the brief research I did. The engine is a decade or more old, and well-used throughout the BMW range (X5, 7-series, 6-series), with extensive support around the web. I wouldn't expect to pay significantly more to keep one going than a 130i that has been similarly looked-after (which implies a need to buy on history).
I also happen to think that the 5-series of that vintage looks great in MSport trim.

Not quite, sadly. Dropping the manual requirement would bring in all sorts of 5.4L AMG loveliness, such as the CLK55. Might edge the mpg requirement a touch, unfortunately.I never really understand the arbitrary age limit when considering a car.
A quick look on Autorader with a max price of £8000 (for haggle room) returns 7 pages of M3's.
I think it would be hard to look past these tbh, there must be more than a few good ones with that number to choose from.
Tbh - ignoring the age thing. I'd even look at e36 M3's. I don't think you'll loose much on a tidy one. E30 prices are going crazy, the e36 might not reach the same levels, but it'll surely follow suit and appreciate.

Different tools for the job, to be honest.A quick look on Autorader with a max price of £8000 (for haggle room) returns 7 pages of M3's.

Having spent a lot of time in E36/46 M3s and a 5-series, I know which I would prefer to drive every day. Obviously the 5er wouldn't get a look-in at the weekend, but the M3s would frustrate me to drive daily.

Each to their own I guess, shows we are all different.Having spent a lot of time in E36/46 M3s and a 5-series, I know which I would prefer to drive every day. Obviously the 5er wouldn't get a look-in at the weekend, but the M3s would frustrate me to drive daily.
Personally not really sure or convinced how an M3 would be frustrating daily... but nor am I convinced they are special enough for weekend only use either.

I don't like the look of Cayennes, I like Macans, but budget limits and no place of my own yet! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2006-Porsche-Cayenne-4-5...

The RX8s are amazing cars with a fascinating engine, but I couldn't live with sub 20 mpg. I'm also saving for a house (car first, priorities in order!) but I know things would be tight for the first year, so I can't spend loads on fuel a month, at the expense of food or something similar for the house.
It sucks growing up!
