Van with three seats up front?

Transit, Vito, Hi-Ace?

Failing that, a Citroen Berlingo Multispace would be my choice. Either 1.9D or 2.0 HDI, not a 1.6 HDI.

A trailer and a lock-up.
Won't work. The guy is working between school runs. There's an hour wasted prattling about with a trailer straight away.
Easy, either take trailer with you. Or leave trailer and all kit where you're working, nip out for school run and then back to finish the job. You only need to use the lock-up @ the end of the working day.

If your buddy has a people mover/van type thing what's he going to do with all his kit.

He only does basic jobs for old dears but I know a gardener who uses an immaculate 96 imperial blue escort cosworth, tools and mower in the boot cool

Something like an L200, Navara etc.

Quite a few within that budget, 4 doors, 4 seats, big bed with hardtop cover..

the correct answer is a transit. Will get a decent one for his budget.

Surely has to be a wee trailer and keep the A3 unless he really can't find somewhere secure to keep it.

A few years ago now, but my wife got a Hilux Surf to cart her gardening gear around in in something that would also serve as a car. Cost 3.5k 10 years ago. Still going strong.

How about a Hyundai Santa Fe? He could probably get a decent 2.7 CDX in his budget with reasonable mileage. Supposed to be pretty reliable and capable for what they are. Not the prettiest 4x4 but decent loading and lugging capability and plenty of space for the little peeps

Another vote for a Japanese crew cabbed pickup. I have 2 friends with Nissan Navara's (One plumber, One landscaper) both have been extremely reliable and they are great for getting onto sketchy work sites aswell. Supposedly get a solid 30mpg too.

I think the problem is he has to park that on his driveway.
