wife thinks i am mad - well whats new!

I wouldn't spend more than 5k on a dull car like an estate, or SUV etc. Besides, no child needs an estate car. So find something dull if you must, then bank the rest.
Or spend the £20k change on something worth driving and keeping, such as a Lotus, Ginetta, Caterham etc. Anything large, complex and full of toys will be worth bugger all in years to come. Get a fun toy :P

Yeah sorry another sensible post but my advice would be to never put "liquid" cash into a car of that type - maybe one that could become an asset but not daily transport.
Why not lease or get a loan (especially considering your low mileage), the depreciation / costs / repayments will amount to the same thing only difference is you will be £25k better off for a rainy day!

You guys are far too sensible!
Our mortgage is about 50% of the value of our house (no willy waving here we have just been bloody careful to get to that position.)
The reason I do not want to pay off the mortgage is we have both lost our dads. My dad was 62, my wifes dad 64 and this has happened in the last two years. I just do not see the point in us paying shed loads back on the mortgage to have a happy retirement when I could pretty much go the same way as my dad. My dad put off so many things - and didn't make it to retirement.
Hence the reason of maybe getting a nicer car than I normally would.
My interest has always been cars - not to keep up with the joneses - my car history is Rover 25, Vauxhall Corsa, Vauxhall astra - nothing to write home about!
I have thought about delaying said car purchase for a year and getting something like a audi S6 estate (4.0 v8 twin turbo) prices are a bit high at the minute on audi used website.
I know a car is a car, I have done white goods motoring and if I am honest I am bored of being safe!
Maybe I should scratch that v8 itch now before they are all taken away from us and do a pistonheads salute in a amg!

If that's the case, it sounds like you need to stick your budget in a search filter, sort low -> high on the MPG filter and search till you find something that fits I still think "Smiles per Gallon" needs to have some form of calculation (although it probably has a negative correlation to MPG, hence my recommendation!)
Well if you're only do 10 miles a day & you don't want to be sensible there is only one estate worth looking at:

Missus has said no to a golf r. Not special enough.
Sooo.. it sounds like she's got some ideas of her own. Let' see - a Golf R isn't 'special' enough, but you've got a Mondeo and a Mazda 6 on your short list. Does she have a 'list' of her own and how does it correlate with yours? (or is that why she thinks you're mad )

This! Great suggestion Tell the missus you've saved £10K, she'll be impressed

Don't buy a bloody Volvo - you haven't retired yet!
The other sensible option might be to keep your current car and buy something very special for the weekend that wouldn't lose money - maybe an old Porsche, TVR or similar.

I'll have a vote for the DS5 (simply because few others probably would) If you get a late model it will have had the dampers upgrade which sorts out the ride comfort. the 2.0l Diesel is miles more refined than any Merc diesel and puts out 180 bhp. You will have all the toys you could want (HUD, massaging seats, roof binds) lovely interior and a unique looking car.
The best part is that the depreciation will ensure that you won't have to spend anywhere near your budget & get a used / ex demo late plate for considerably less than some of the others on your shortlist.
Me too, I think they can look really nice in right spec / wheels. The best part is that the depreciation will ensure that you won't have to spend anywhere near your budget & get a used / ex demo late plate for considerably less than some of the others on your shortlist.
Also the misses had a ds3 for a bit changed my view on Citroen it was very nice to drive and interior much better than I expected.
