The thing is you can actually buy a pretty decent motor for bag these days which means this makes no sense at all.

So it's covered approx 15k miles a year, not much for this type of engine, IF maintained properly could be worth a punt but, sounds like the seller has basically driven it into the ground and is now not worth throwing any money at it to keep it going. Thus £1k IMO is too much. I'd want a long test drive and another £250 off.

If it's the same unit used in BMW-era Range Rovers and the D2 Audi S8 then it's a potential ticking bomb. This one sounds like it has a short fuse already.

Nothing about this advert fills me with hope. And I like a 5 Series.

Not sure why this e39 touring/wagon/estate wasn't the choice? It looks a bit more genuine and... running:

Had one of these from new to 150K, parted with it a few years back and wished I hadn't. Tried a number of more recent equivalents and they come no where near either the all round rightness of the E39 530d estate or the reliability but there are better examples for this money.

That's more like it. Plus the 3ltr petrol is a much nicer engine and the usual cooling system issues have been sorted.

Agreed. Even with the cosmetic issues of this car, it's still a better bet than the one chosen by Shed this week.

Though we all knew where Shed was going with this one. wink

530d? Nah. A high mileage V8 would have been interesting. Next.

Bring back the Metro!
Yes! But then I suppose you have to have a few weeks of the usual knackered old BMW/Saab/Merc stuff that most people seem to want from SOTW to make the real gems like the fabulous Metro Chairman stand out.

Seems reasonable for a heavy old auto as an average. My e39d manual only averaged 35ish.

I was just about to post this one myself.

The shed looks as though it has rear suspension issues as well, but this one looks ok.

Lovely shed, but i'm scared of the E39 because of PH!

Very poor effort this week.
Perhaps, but this section is called Shed of the Week, and looks for cars advertised at £1k and under.
Otherwise it would have the codicil of 'Shed of the Week' ; cars up to £1k advertised price but in reality are worth £xxxx'
To be fair, I drove a 530d manual at work, a strange thing, white paintwork, funny blue lights on the roof etc, which was the early 3.0d and one which I thought was quite sluggish. The bush at the base of the gear lever was past its best, and the result was like wagging your finger in the Albert Hall....
Love the Touring, but I've always stuck to the 523/5/8 petrol and never had a problem, but that's down to clever buying.

It has the GM box. Made in Strasbourg and containing lots of bits made in America.
