Fast forward to 2017 and average Joe is driving a 300bhp Golf R, RS3s, and 300bhp diesels... more than a match for a 530d, V70 D5 et al. The stakes have been raised and Police vehicles are no longer as fit for purpose as they used to be.
Police helicopters however are perfectly fit for purpose. A900ss said:
330d's are auto only as well as the 335d....
I remember it was avalivle on the E90's.. shame not on the F30's then.. I love the engine for all round performance and economy,i average well over 50mpg in mine with 313BHP and little over 5sec 0.60.. what more do i need in a every day car. ? Phil Dicky said:

Except NPAS exists in name only now. Huge areas of the country no longer have air support and those that do have severely restricted flight hours. Helicopters cannot lift to pre-position, we must be actual pursuit before they get authorisation, by which time it's too late. The 3.0ds are more than adequate. If a car is out running it, then that means it's going at speeds which will result in the Officer being hung, drawn and quartered if their is a collision which results in serious injury. It simply isn't worth going at warp factor 10.
Our cars have uprated electrical systems and that's about it. No super duper brakes, shocks, engines. Totally standard.

330d, faster than 95% of the cars on the road out of the box.
Add a trained police driver with the correct level of training, faster than 99% of the cars on the road.
And don't forget, people will move out of the way of Jonny Rozzer in his 330d when he has all the lights and sirens going, whereas Billy Criminal in his Golf R is going to have to make everyone move/swerve around them to make the same progress.Add a trained police driver with the correct level of training, faster than 99% of the cars on the road.

Both about as useful as potatoes or am I being unfair to potatoes?
Yea, I'd suggest a x30d is useful in most situations. The problem is, high powered vehicles are much more popular and accessible to the masses than they used to be.
Going to back in the day when Police were smoking about in V8 Jags and Senators, only a handful of cars could outrun them in pursuit situations, and most crims were in Astra GTe's and XR3s. The Plod cars had a good shout and keeping up.

I've seen quite a lot of M135i unmarked cars. They will probably have M140i now.Yea, I'd suggest a x30d is useful in most situations. The problem is, high powered vehicles are much more popular and accessible to the masses than they used to be.

Its always easier to be the chaser. Police drivers are trained to spot hazards etc etc, but they are no better than many other people when it comes down to the physical driving of the vehicles and they don't have to be...they are not racing and don't have to be faster/better driver than the person they are persuing, just be able to follow them safely.

I regularly see police cars and especially ambulances being held up by tts completely oblivious to anything outside the little bubble of their car. No doubt sitting there in the outside lane at 60mph singing along to Justin Bieber at full volume with all their mirrors positioned at them so they can practice their selfie pout.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
