No performance pack ? Seems underpowered
Good god. I drove my sister's brand new Polo GTi the other day (with 185 ish bhp) and that did not feel underpowered. My 530i only has 30 bhp more than the new Polo GTi and is much heavier. Is that underpowered?

To look at....it's so bland! Bland bland bland!
It's understated...

Have a read of this thread to see what happens when manufacturers avoid bland...

I thought that when I seen this too, he loved his polo he did.
I never thought I'd miss him, but a thread about a Polo GTI seems a bit empty without him telling us, in detail, why the car was so much better than anything in its class.

VW need 2 litres to put out 200hp reliably?
Their dabble with the 180ps 1.4 twincharger unit didn't go too well on the reliability front did it?
Neither did their 1.8 right? I seem to remember some of those drinking oil like petrol...

I like the look of this!

It does look massive though and I'm not keen on that bit of body coloured trim above the front badge.

This thread. There are a lot of disillusioned people about. According to PH, the Polo GTi should be a 300bhp, bespoilered beast powered from a 1.0 and costing <£18k,

ITS A VW POLO! It's always been a small, conservative warm hatch.

I love the new front end. I still think the rear looks really weedy though with it's tiny lights. Not much going on with the interior compared to the current shape, that i can particularly notice, but it looks like a nice enough place to sit.

I'm really hoping for some decent cheap lease to replace my fantastically boring Audi A4. I said i wouldn't lease again but one of these could tempt me i think. I've always much preferred the Golf GTI but i quite like the smaller dimensions of the Polo.

Is this now just basically a de-tuned Golf GTI engine then?

+1 As its switched to the MQB chassis (same as a Golf) - I think this is effectively a slightly smaller, slightly detuned, slightly more affordable Golf GTi.

Which has got to be a great thing in my opinion, but rather predictably is never going to be enough for some of the idiots on PH.

PS Yes its conservative - VW is a conservative brand, always has been...

That's such a smart looking car, both inside and out.

So that's the Audi S1, that Polo, and i'am guessing the new Ibiza Cupra will have the 2.0L then ? Oh and the F56 Mini Cooper S that have 2.0L now that I can think off.

Pretty sure the ibiza cupra is no longer a thing.

Maybe restricting it to 200hp to leave room for an R (with S1 running gear?)? If not I'm sure a tuner like Revo could easily get 260+ out of it with a stage 1 software map.

yes and no, ours is about to hit 100k miles and has had no faults so far apart ....

from burning 1ltr of every 1k miles

and total contempt from VW custom service

My friend's 61-plate Scirocco 180 had piston 4 melt. A common fault, and not long after the engine was released VW quietly uprated it. The VW offered him a goodwill of £500 contributed toward his next Volkswagen, after they slapped him with a £6k bill for a refurbished engine. Oh and they couldn't figure out how to switch off the EML and told him to "not worry about it".

I love the little Polo. I had a 1.4 TSI on hire back in 2013 whilst on holiday and thought it was plentiful. It had what you needed from a car and didn't over complicate things. It had so much character too and did everything I needed it do. It was reasonably nippy too, which from heavy cars we live with these days is an achievement on its own.

I really bonded with that car.

It was simple fun and I was sad to hand it back.

Same here. My wife had a 105 PS TSi 6 speed manual. It was quite sprightly and I used to enjoy chucking it about. I think nigh-on double the power in this GTi would be adequate.

I test drive the current Poli Gti a couple of months ago - was plenty quick enough but it left me utterly cold....

It's the first time I've ever taken a car back early from a test drive !

The layout of the instrument panel looks like its drooping down to the right in the interior picture. For us it will droop down to the left smile

Obvious that the VAG marketing bods decided the Polo couldn't step on the shoes of the S1 though..200 vs 225bhp
