Not sure I could be so complimentary over the ZR though...
Excellent steering and feedback. Not great in many other ways.

I think the older models have their own appeal i.e. ZS, ZR, etc. As cheap used cars for dailies or track stuff, they aren't known to be too bad. I actually quite like the ZS 2.5 V6 180 with the huge wing on the back.

These new ones have no appeal at all though, to me, anyway. People who want something new but also really cheap will probably go for a Dacia, as said above. A few people in my work have done exactly that.

In terms of the new Chinese MGs, I dislike the 6 but like the 3. The 3 is decent to drive and great value. The 6 is cheap, but the interior and engine are both terrible. Yet to have a go in one of their new crossovers though.

That interior looks about 10 years older than the one in my 2005 golf.

Putting MG badges on motoring porridge such as Morris Oxfords & Austin 1100's started the silliness & only the dumb & blinkered were fooled.
After all MG stands for Morris Garages, how pedestrian suburban & working class is that & hardly the stuff of romance & motoring dreams..
Some people are so daft I reckon if you put a blue & white propeller badge on a Dacia sales would rocket.

Not older, more basic and cheaper. This is how a 1995 Golf looked inside.

I cannot imagine how depressed MGs salesmen must be every day.
A mate of mine sells them.

He won't hear a bad word said...
Profoundly deaf then?

He's got his fingers in his ears and is going 'la la la la la la'

I used to have a ZR 1.4 petrol, which felt like a rocket ship to a youngster (just realised the 0-60 time was actually in the 10s hehe)
Quite liked the handling and the sporty tat stuck on it, but the heater motor didn't work, the sunroof leaked, the gearbox failed on the M6 and the head gasket was also on the way out. My brand loyalty started and finished with that car!

Always quite liked the MG3's. It's crying out for some hotting up.

Harsh, but not entirely unfair.

You'd have be a total MG fanboy to buy one over something like a Dacia which is cheaper and made with Renault parts bin components (so you can get spares easily).
I have always reckoned that if you took something dreadful like a Dacia & put either a BMW or MG badge on it sales would go through the roof.
For many the badge is all.
The MG fraternity are the most blinkered of all & I speak as a one time 1960's classic sports car owner who attended many rallies around the UK.

there was an MG Maestro(it may have had a Honda engine) competing last weekend in the Solway Coast Rally. I hadn't seen one for ages.
But I do remember it being on my shortlist of cars in 1989 at the wise old age of 19!

Neighbour has an MG3. He drives it more often than his 335i cab or KXR cab (God that is such a PH sentence). He's a property developer so I don't know what that says about his tastes but he's had it a couple of years, doesn't seem to go wrong, and has quite a nice raspy exhaust note. Or a blow. Probably a blow. I wouldn't have one but then again I don't think they're worth the criticism.

But MG they ain't.

I'm not a fan of new MGs.
However I have a 2005 MG ZT 1.8t. Everyone is now about to type a response about head gasket failure I'm sure, but if you maintain them well enough they're no trouble.

I bought it with 50k miles, a private reg, and the already fitted big black Dare drug dealer alloy wheels. I sold the reg and wheels for £700. I paid £800 for the car. There are worse ways to spend 100 quid. A huge amount of car for the money. Shed of the week ought to step his game up.

Not me I have an MG ZT it's only done 34000 miles since 2005, surprises many modern stuff

Dilema, holiday abroad or UK buying a convertible with a budget 1500 quid totally disposable. Decided on a convertible and after testing a few cars mainly MGF and MX5, this was many years ago, bought an MGF VVC, MX5's really are crap, yes I said that. If it lasted three weeks we were happy. It lasted about a year before the usual HGF.
Became a part of the family and fixed her up like an old dog with vets bills. Flawed but loved.

There was a guy on one of the forums I frequent who had problems with his new MG from what I remember and in the end instead of getting rid and moving on he then signed up for another one on lease at £250p/m for a diesel MG. Could have had a Golf R or Leon Cupra for that.
There is also a guy by my work who drives his MG6 on the red line 24/7 with stupid MG stickers all over it and drainpipe exhausts. Bit Ott for 150bhp car.
I can see the appeal of the older ZT and ZR etc for old school petrol head fun

I'm surprised BMW didn't hang onto the MG brand brand and launch a small sports car to rival the MX5. They could have shared manufacturing facilities and dealerships with Mini.

Sure, but they'd be doing fine without Mini too. Didn't stop them seeing the potential and acting on it. Just surprised they didn't do the same with MG.
