I spent a long time looking at 3.0R's to buy as a family wagon. I have always loved them and they are, undeniably, great cars. However I decided they are just not special enough to justify the poor consumption and £500p.a. VED.
You have to really, really 'want' one.
You need to look harder , a pre March 2006 3.0 spec B is circa £245 for tax, have you driven one to decide they are not special? You have to really, really 'want' one.

Agree, great cars. I've had a 99 Gen3 wagon with the 2.5NA engine, an 05 Gen4 GT with the 2.0T, and now have a 13 Gen5 GT with the 2.5T, and even though the Gen5 is swifter and roomier, my fave is still the Gen4. Well-screwed together, good fun to drive, and probably big enough for most families. Not sure why everyone seems bothered about VED and fuel with these - 25-30mpg is not too shabby for the performance on offer. GT usually gets around 35 on a run.
Also had custody for several weeks of my mate's 02 Outback with the H6 engine and 4-sp auto. Lazy thing, the 3.0 is detuned for the Outback, or was at that time, but still felt good to drive.

The extra VED post 06 is only a couple of tanks of fuel difference so shouldn't really make a difference to anyone's buying decision (especially given how often people will believe you are at the station.)
Had a long hard look at these, for £3,000 - 4,000 the UK model GT-Bs seem good value considering they are half the price of the JDM turbos and almost every part is the same bar the engine.
Alternatively the impreza WRX wagon comes in under £4k, must be a consideration.

Purchased a really nice 2005 3.0R to replace a desperately slow 2.0 Saab 95 of similar vintage - why on earth did I wait so long!
MPG around town is pretty much the same (26mpg) but performance so many levels higher.
Driving through Milton Keynes (the land of roundabouts) is a hoot. It's a real Q car as many VAG owners/leasers have discovered
After 2x Foresters, and now the Legacy, I'm happy to recommend Subaru to anyone for reliability - and subtlety.

The Legacy tourer has served me well for over a decade but alas it's Toodoloo Subaru for me. Thanks for safely whisking me about for the last 11 years in my 2006 Spec B tourer. Reassuringly reliable transport for the enthusiastic driver. Great car that puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. For sale advert currently on the Uklegacy.com site.

Treated myself a few months ago to a manual JDM 2.0 twinscroll Legacy wagon. Breathed on slightly to 300bhp @ 4,000rpm.
Spent a while looking as I wanted the facelifted model with the 6spd box.
Honestly, it's awesome. Very attractive (to my eyes) and nobody seems to know that there's anything special going on underneath the bonnet, until you press the fast pedal, at which point it becomes almost hilariously quick.
You can drive it as gently as you want and it's very civilised, but if you stick it in S# mode it becomes a complete animal. Not too laggy, either: the delivery is really quite smooth (certainly compared to the kick in the back I got from the 2.5t in the Forester.)
Here's mine (before I sold the Fozzer):

I had a classic I tuned for many years which was running a 2.0 twinscroll (VF37) and loved it!

I fully understand the appeal of such a car.
I wanted to stop suffering high maintenance costs from my 650i convertible and wanted to have a bullet proof daily driver with off-road capabilities.
It's just the 2,5L and an Automatic, but it's just ace and bullet proof:

You can do rock driving, dune bashing, camping, whatever! This is the car I will drive home to Germany next year in, taking some extra miles through Russia! Can't think of a better car for the job!

1) You need to use [pic] tags rather than [img]2) You've got the closing tag incorrect, should be [/pic]
3) The URL you are trying to link to isn't a picture. (Brings up a 'Bad Request' error when you try to go directly to it...)

Good to hear they are so well regarded. I had a moment on ebay and bought a 2006 jdm twinscroll import as a replacement for my wrx wagon.

Nah, not a typo... unless I've mis-read the dyno sheet. I'll check when I get home. I had a classic I tuned for many years which was running a 2.0 twinscroll (VF37) and loved it!
If it is making 300bhp at 4k, that's seriously impressive even for a twin scroll. My old twin scroll made 374bhp at just under 7k but it didn't make 300bhp at 4k. My car was forged with all of the supporting mods and ran @ 1.75b at it's peak.
What's bhp is it making at it's peak?
