Your pedantism still isnt answering the question, add some value, where does the demand come from?
From people who want them. I think that's traditional. From my observations, there are 2 types of Tiguan buyer:
1. School run mum. Buys a 2.0TDi for fuel economy and cheap tax. But must be R-Line spec so it's more sporty/sparkly.
2. Bert and Mavis. For the weekly shopping run, and trips to National Trust properties.
Neither of these groups will want a proper "R" version, so they'll probably sell about 10.

I knew which way this thread would go as soon as I saw the article headline.
An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messagesI knew which way this thread would go as soon as I saw the article headline.
Not everybody will share your opinion and that's the point of an internet forum. The only angry little man I see in this thread is you.
I don't understand why anybody would want a big wafty jeep with 'go', I'd instead opt for a fast estate. But as mentioned above, not everybody agrees with each other opinions. That doesn't mean people shouldn't voice them, if nobody voiced opinions on here, there would be very few posts.

I am not angry nor am I little.... But asking why and believing that these types are cars are a tad on the silly side is fine as its a simple opinion. I am more than happy to hear differing opinions, show me the light! What I am finding is those who share differing opinons are not in the market for one anyone and hence have little to say.. shameI knew which way this thread would go as soon as I saw the article headline.

So is the 340i ridiculous when you can get a perfectly fine family car in the 318d? The main thing the 340i does better is win at traffic light races after all Uncle John said:

Bizarre, isn't it.I knew which way this thread would go as soon as I saw the article headline.
Different people like different things. Market responds.
The horror.

People who want a stupidly over powered engine in a boring family car?Why get a BMW 340i over a 318i?
I fully understand that VAG didn't want the R to canablise sales on the RS3.

The 3 series is a good platform to start from when building a hot version, take the M's ect as you know. I don't see why you would take a disadvantaged platform like the baby suv as a base for a 400hp 5 cylinder, even more so when the Golf R didn't get the treatment.

Have you actually driven one? As in the current gen Tiguan?I fully understand that VAG didn't want the R to canablise sales on the RS3.

Highline spec TSFI, TSI or what ever the petrol VW engines are these days... I hardly need a 5 cylinder 400hp engine in my baby SUV..... it is seriously rediculous in my eyes.
Nobody 'needs' anything of the sort. This is Pistonheads though, a forum dedicated to a love of all things automotive, and shared by people who drive Micras all the way to Aventadors. Not all cars are meant to be solely utilitarian, and judging by SUV sales (of any kind), I expect this will accomodate a great many buyers who would otherwise punt for a Juke R or similarly veined vehicle.
Not everything is for everyone.

Perhaps I am wrong and need to get behind the wheel of one, I could be turned to the dark side.
