RE: Mercedes G350d: Driven
Discussion
Part of me loves these things, but I struggle to understand why you'd actually buy one. It's not going to be as pleasant on the road as many much cheaper SUV type vehicles and whilst it may be more capable off-road than just about anything else with number-plates, who spends ~£100k on something to abuse over terrain which would leave a Range Rover stranded?

A real pity they don't make a bare bones version. These are one vehicle I really want but I cant even afford a 1980s rust bucket! Great machine.
They do but I don't think you can buy one herehttps://www.mercedes-benz.com/en/mercedes-benz/veh...
No one is going to use a £90k car off road. I can see the appeal in the AMG or Brabus ones as at least they sound good and you can scare people out of the way by looking like you're in the Russian mob. Buying the diesel is just admitting you can't afford the real deal - it has no other redeeming qualities.

These days its a car to be seen in rather than one to drive which is a shame. Its come a long way from its Peugeot P4 roots:

I beg to disagree, as would quite a few other G Wagen owners. I have taken mine extensively off road where it has been incredibly dependable and has been able to get through some difficult terrain with very few modifications, whilst other travelling companions have extensively modified their LandCruisers etc to get through the same terrain. Modifying a Toyota or land rover to achieve the same outcome will cost quite a bit, if not close to the price of a G, the difference is that I can drive mine to the office on Monday and to a restaurant on Friday night.

Agreed. Used mine in the desert many times and plan to use it in the UK as intended.

The point was its roots (whether with Mercedes or Peugeot badge) was as a utilitarian "bare bones" 4x4 not a V12 leather clad gin palace...and yes I'm aware that the article features the 350d...
