When I think of a Cupra R, I think of the 225. This was enough of a step up from a Cupra to justify the price increase. This new one isn't, not that anyone will have the chance to find out.

Thing with the M3/M5’s is you’ve got to carry on the 50k running costs.

But then I'm guessing that you wouldn't want to spend £30k on any bramd new hot hatch?

I can go one rarer with a Toledo 20VT - it's a Leon Cupra disguised as grandpa's saloon car.

Or even rarer - petrol-engined Freetrack, something like 75 registered in the UK. Leon Cupra disguised as a bus?

This is such a disappointment. Really don't see how this justifies the R badge at all. The original R was 210hp (later 225hp) to the Cupra's 180, the second gen had 265hp to the Cupra's 240 and a distinctive exhaust, but this seems to add nothing really bar spec and a token engine update.

But at least it had the right gearbox and keeps FWD, which means it is a little different to the S3 and Golf R.

Maybe it is very different to drive and they have worked hard to improve the feel of the thing. Maybe it grips harder, has a more playful rear or more feelsome steering. If that's the case then maybe all is forgiven as there isn't exactly a lack of power. Somehow, I doubt it though.

I find this shape of Leon to be about the most bland looking car I have ever seen.

I know list price is irrelevant to most people for brand new cars and also rarely reflex the true price paid but;

A SEAT Leon Cupra 300 5dr manual with all goodies added to the R as standard is £33500.

And a Gold R 5dr manual with as close to like for like spec (reversing camera, keyless entry, 19" wheels, adaptive dampers, upgraded stereo and even £495 carbon mirrors) has a list price of £37500.

So it basically splits the difference on these two - I know the Golf has 4WD and probably lower PCP price - and doesn't seem unfair for the carbon fibre and alcantara.

I wouldn't personally buy a new one for £35K and sadly it has come to market a year or two too soon for me to get a nearly new one based on my planned change cycle of cars. At least if you are in the market for a second hand one at some stage, you don't have to worry about the spec as they're fully loaded from the factory - just a case of finding your preferred colour (and your choice is limited their too) if there are any for sale.

But you can knock around £5k off the price of a Cupra if you go through an online broker. I bet there's zero discount to be had on a Cupra R.
