Could these be the last non-scene-taxed semi-interesting Ford?
Indeed.
Nice classic/retro dadwagon at a sensible price with decent performance and looks, what is not to like?

My friend was interested in this very car a couple of weeks ago (many years ago he owned a white XR4i).
Until I showed him the recent MOT history; too much recent serious rust for his liking or mine.
I had a white 2.8 and Blue 2.9 4x4 back in the day, simple things but effective and fairly quick in their day.
I also owned a black Turbo Technics converted twin Turbo, bought from a dark dangerous lady on a dark night (on a bridge near the Toyota factory in Derbyshire iirc)
Rapid thing and very different power delivery to my subsequent Cosworths, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
This has a 3yr period most recently of being off the road and then returning with a ‘fail’ on its initial MOT.
And when it was then retested the advisory notice was that the underside of the vehicle was heavily undersealed; if that doesn’t make you want to turn and run for the hills then I’m not sure what would.
I’d want it up on a 2-post lift and have a good look around and poke with a screwdriver before I even considered a test drive...

in its day one of the best cars money could buy.

Big grunty 2.8 / 2.9
Antilock brakes one of the first fitted as std
Heated front screen
on the big estates they had Nivomat self levelling rear suspension.

Not the fastest but you drove around on a wave of torque..

Very Very underrated and If I had the opportunity to have an old car back it would be E276 BOO, my old Sierra Ghia 4x4 estate. Ex Edinburgh motor show car, fully loaded... they were simply brilliant...

Most of Britains police forces can't be wrong. most had them and most kept them way longer than other cars in their fleets..

My dad had an F reg 2.9 in moonstone grey, which I ran for a while.
I agree with a previous post about that being the best looking variant - I'm not quite so keen on this final makeover edition.
An appealing car for the right money - effortless cruiser with the torquey V6, rides pretty well, stock handling not bad. Not the last word in refinement, but a pleasant trip back to a time when cars were more interesting.

My dad had one of these. an E reg 2.8 in Mercury Grey.

Loved it and learnt to drive in it. Grunty engine and rear wheel biased AWD. What was not to like?

Didn't look quite as good after I stuffed it into a lamppost one afternoon. nono

I liked these, haven't seen one for ages.

IIRC, the later 2.9s had slightly higher/softer suspension than the 2.8s and didn't feel quite as planted. I remember driving one in poor conditions, ie snow/ice, and it was very effective, even on normal tyres.

Mate of mine's dad had one of these new as his company car.

Felt very luxurious at the time and the six cylinder engine made a lovely noise.

I had one of these in this exact colour. Had a mongoose exhaust and twin filter kit. It had rs side skirts and a cosworth interior. Was a great car when I was 19 (some 18 years ago now).
Both mine were Tasmin Blue, and I had a Magnex and twin filters on my second one and I thought it made a lovely noise. I was 20 when I got my first one...I'm 45 this year(I wonder where the time goes!).

I'd still love another one for some reason...I suppose it's the rose tints though. smile
Mine was smokestone blue which this car is in I believe. I wish I had have kept it and put a 24v cosworth in it but I bought a sapphire cosworth to replace the xr4x4. I have a lot of fond memories of it (and the Cossie lol).

My first Sierra sapphire gls (my first car at 18) was tasmin blue. Wasn't a bad colour.

I had a black 2.9 on an H plate a few years back in 2007... cost me 400 quid and was in pretty good nick. It had bills for 10 grand plus in the history and I was only the 3rd owner IIRC.

Loved it!

Kenlowe fan and twin pipercross induction kit fitted when I bought it, I then fitted a stainless big bore system, cosworth interior, set of spax adjustables, polybushes and lowered it 20mm.

Not the fasted thing in the world, but the engine produced satisfying amounts of torque: used to drive around town using 2nd and 5th gears. In fact, if you put it into 5th at 5mph, it would still pull like a train.

Saw an indicated 125 on more than one occasion and it had plenty left (on a private road, and definitely not on the M5 just past Taunton one afternoon). I was planning on dropping the 24 valve cossie V6 lump in, but my current car (Volvo Amazon) took up all my attention so I never got round to it.

Tin worm and and dodgy electrics killed mine in the end... sold it to a chap in the XR owners club for 300 quid in 2012. So at least parts of the old girl live on.

Rest (rust) in peace H51 CUR.

One of these was my first ever four wheel drive driving experience.
Pulling out of a wet junction, thought I'd give it a bootfull to see how good this new fangled four wheel drive malarkey was... it took off like a scalded cat. Very Impressed I was.

Also, I've been driven around Brands Hatch in one of these, by Martin Brundle, Johnny Herbert, Paul Stewart, Jonathon Palmer and Sir Stirling Moss.
Sir Stirling was amazing, drove with arms straight and perfect lines- exactly as you'd expect.
Palmer was a total hooligan, sideways and everywhere!

And I agree,£4K is cheap for a 'classic Ford' as long as it's not a rust trap.

That is one truely horrific dash. I could deal with it for a cossie but not this. Not ever. I understand the desire for certain old fords but this is just nothing to get excited about for me. Each to their own though. If it floats other boats then I can respect that.

I had one of these back in the day spent a small fortune modifying it a 24v Cosworth engine x2 ,first one went bang , great engine smooth power delivery loads of torque , some fancy exhast manifolds from fitz at TOP BOSS tuning any one remember them ? Custom made stainless exhast from power flow it was fairly noisey but when your young did not matter.you could get some crazy power from the 24v Cosworth engine from twin turbos or a super charger , some people think it's better than the famous YB , had to put a Cosworth box in I kept breaking the weak standard one , great car but I dread to think how much time and money I sunk into keeping it going

I had the Janspeed manifolds and system on mine. Was a real event starting it up in the underground car park where I used to park - had a mini muscle car feel with the exhaust burble. Put Cosworth suspension on ( quite softly set up as standard ), Wilwood ft discs and Calipers, poly TCA bushes on and it handled really well

Was the dangerous rwd model though.....
Friend had a few 4x4s - top fun, preferred mine to my 325 Sport, and cheap for bits a couple of decades ago

I had a couple of 2.8s and a couple of 2.9s. The last 2.9 was the Turbo Technics 280 twin turbo version. A very hooli car. Great fun.

It'd make a decent donor for a 4wd kit car.

I used to see him and his car quite a bit at shows/meets. I used to live fairly local to them. Great thread this for bringing memories back. smile
