The Arna could have been great, if they'd got Nissan to do the reliability and the boring bits like selecting hard wearing fabric, and left Alfa the handling and looks.

Instead they got Nissan to do the styling, and Alfa were handed the rustproofing and the electrics. So that went brilliantly.

I cannot think of a single thing it did better than the Cavalier it replaced, and was far less reliable, at least initially. Coolest door mirrors on the planet, mind.

I saw one on the M69 in January last year. Though it was probably a Nissan Cherry N12 in disguise.

The last Arna left the roads in 2007.

Allow me to make a case for the Vectra;

I always rather liked them. A friend of my dad's had a GSI when I was a kid and thought it was a great looking thing, and even better in estate form. Not the best car ever, for sure, but they came out the factory with body kits, recaro seats and a V6. They even did a homologation super touring model, and had a pretty cool BTCC car. Some of the cars mentioned, ie: Mitsubishi Charisma (lack of), and the horrid Nissan Almera Mk2 had no effort thrown at them, no motorsport versions and no worthwhile special editions, but the Vectra surely deserves a bit of credit?

My mother in law had two of these, the first was written off then she got another and kept it for about 9 years till it died...very very tough but offered nothing that the competition didn't. She now has a Splash which on the whole is a pretty well sorted little car.

In principle it could have been great for Renault (the 206cc was a smash for Peugeot) in reality, no one wanted one.



Everyone bought a 306 instead.



CAR Magazines headline was 'how could Ford have got it so wrong'. That said, it did spawn the Cosworth, saving grace and all that.



This was one Citroen could not afford to get wrong. The Saxo VT models accounted for half of all Saxo sales, and was the Max Power hero, a car of the time. I had one from new at 24, loved it. Drove a neighbours C2 VTS, it was crap, and unlike it's daddy it looked crap too.
