RE: Jaguar XE S: Driven

We have an XE, albeit the 2.0d R Line 180.
Simply put, it is bloody awful. I thought the X Type we had 15 years or so ago was the worst Jaguar could do, but the XE has given it a jolly good run for its money.
In the three years we’ve had it, it’s spent nearly 20 weeks back at the dealership getting various bits, that weren’t built well enough in the first place, replaced. On the rare occasions we have had it back, it rattles and squeaks, the engine sounds like a bag of spanners and it eats tyres.
Thank goodness it’s coming to the end of its lease. It’ll be going back to Jaguar and we’ll spend our money on a decent car from a premium marque.

My month old Giulia Veloce, though stunning to look at and drive rattles like a 20 year old Renault and is in the process of being rejected.
It was in the garage for about 50% of my 6 weeks of ownership.

The F Type is now the only Jaguar model you can get the 340 and 300hp petrol V6 in the UK. Dropped from the XE, XF, XJ and F Pace. V8 also dropped from the XJ in the UK. XF and XJ only have diesel V6 if you want 6 cylinders.
The V6 petrol is either 340 or 380. The 300 is an I4 engine. stuart_83 said:

I thought this may happen. A lovely looking car, and I fancy the Quadrafoglio. But I fear it won’t be in one piece after a year. My month old Giulia Veloce, though stunning to look at and drive rattles like a 20 year old Renault and is in the process of being rejected.

The German premium brands are no better to be honest, if you want something reliable and premium I'd go for a Lexus.
Really don't get the Lexus love-in. I didn't look this last time, but the previous three times I changed my cars I looked at Lexus, and was wholly unimpressed.Interesting styling, but just not a good drive. Made Audi feel dynamic, and just didn't feel premium. Don't want to fall into the 'just a posh Toyota' cliche, but that is how it felt.
And their interiors suck. Think Toyota plus

It's more the after sales service - it just does not exist in any way, shape or form. The left hand also doesn't talk to the right hand ... And on the odd occasion it does, they lie like a b*****d to cover their own backs.
Horrible company to deal with.

Haha! These comments cracked me up! I’ve just got my first ever Jag. A 2002 XKR and it’s great. But I know just what people are on about.
My colleague has an XE and it is, well, bks. It feels like a toy car in comparison with my BMW G30. That, I would really recommend.

I’m a BMW fan boy anyhow, but the G30 has really restored my faith. Best thing since the e38 as far as I’m concerned.

Shame - I've always fancied a Jaguar but would never consider one with a 4 cylinder engine.
The 6-pot is being discontinued because they can't sort the emissions ,and they don't sell - maybe they don't sell because they never did sort the emissions?
BMW don't seem to struggle to sell 140is, 240is, 340is, etc.
Don't Jaguar have any engineers now?

Do people really buy 340i’s, C43’s, S4’s and XE-S type cars based on their emissions?
They are all pretty niche cars in terms of percentages sold compared to the masses of 2.0d variants anyway. I would imagine all of them are within a few mpg of each other in the real world, irrespective of what the co2 figures (hence mpg figures) say on paper.
Personally, I find the 3 series pretty bland these days, however good it is on paper, its best feature being available with a manual box, for a bit more interest!
The S4 does nothing for me really, plus I don’t fancy being stabbed to death every month, so my favourites would be the C43 or XE-S. It’s a shame all these 6 cyl cars are disappearing fast though, but if the modern pistonhead types aren’t buying them, I don’t suppose it makes buisness sense to sell them anymore. I reckon a late XE-S will be a nice interesting secondhand buy soon.

The 3 series manual is naff to drive for any sort of distance because the pedals are so offsetHardMiles said:

Of more relevance to this thread, we have an XE too (diesel, Prestige variant). It's a stunning commuting car, faultless for 25k miles so far and always feels special. A review at the time we were looking said 'First Class in the front, Economy in the rear'. It's spot on about the front seats, and as our commuting car the space in the rear was less relevant. It's been that impressive (the steering and damping in particular) I've considered switching E39 M5 + XE to have an XE S, but have ended up waiting for a V8 XE R that never arrived.
Unless I regularly had 3 people or tall adults in the back, the XE would still be my first choice over 3-Series, C-Class, A4, Lexus IS or Alfa. It's just a shame that in their sportiest saloon, Jaguar have dropped having a genuinely sporty engine.

Well of course they do - BIK is very motivational! After all how many "private" buyers are there in this sector of the market?
These days I would imagine lots of companies, trying to be seen to be green, wouldn’t allow such terrible destroyers of the planet on their company car lists.

Who can blame consumers when Jaguar manage to make car full of aluminium so heavy and with a power train that uses so much fuel!
I bet comparing to the numbers of 6 cyl BMW’s sold tells the tale of how wide of the mark Jag has been on the engineering front with the XE.

The numbers paint a terrible picture for Jaguar/the XE
It looks to me (upto last year where numbers are available) that there are only 6,500 Petrol XE registered in the UK total, 800 of them being V6 (compared to 25,000 diesel models.
BMW seem to have just under 1,500 340i registered, I didn't bother including the 335i variants as they were so many.

I think you'd probably be alarmed at just how few 340i are sold by BMW....to customers rather than dealers. 330i is a 4 cyl now tooI bet comparing to the numbers of 6 cyl BMW’s sold tells the tale of how wide of the mark Jag has been on the engineering front with the XE.

Interesting. My F30 340i had pretty poor build quality (plastics that creaked on a near £50k car???) but my late F10 LCI 530d is a step up. Sat in current 7 series and thought it horrifically cheap...not tried Latest 5 yetI’m a BMW fan boy anyhow, but the G30 has really restored my faith. Best thing since the e38 as far as I’m concerned.
