The tank is smaller than an E60 M5. Even at 25mpg that only gives a range of around 380 miles (in reality close to <300 miles mixed driving). Not impressive at all.

The F10 M5 had an 80 litre can and could easily get 400miles plus on a tank.

I believe this is a result of the 4wd system.

My E63s has a similarly small tank vs ita 2wd predecessor.

It can be annoying as you say.

Unless you use an unrestricted autobahn every day I can't see the point. A 520 D will get you from Calais to Nice in the same time and probably more comfortably. Happy to be corrected if anyone knows of a way to drive at 150mph all day that won't result in a massive fine and having the car impounded

I must be getting old, i fondly remember europe crossing road trips in my E60 M5, but now i think i would settle for a 550i, giving me most of the power, most of the speed, most of the fun, but none of the M5 specific consumables, like brake pads etc, so i can save most of the running costs...

You can’t see the point in the 600bhp V8TT derivative versus the 4-pot diesel? Have you ever been in one? The difference for me is that I’d take the M5 on that trip any day and enjoy every moment. If I had a 520d I’d just book an easyJet.

What a ridiculous post. Why bother with a 520d as that goes over 70mph which is the UK speed limit so it's pointless. Might as well have something pointless that puts a smile on your face than something soul destroyingly boring

For £100,000 I can think of a lot more stuff to put a smile on my face than a 5 series with a strap-on.

And what new car would you buy which is more fun, yet still does the M5s greatest remit as well? There aren't a great deal of others out there. Audi RS6, Merc E63s, Porsche Panamera 4S (which for similar money is WELL done on power....440bhp vs 600bhp).

There aren't many decent 4 door saloon cars which are as quiet, refined and well-appointed on the inside as the M5. Alfa Guilia Quadrafoglio is a fair bit smaller and nowhere near as nice inside.

So - over to you?

I’ll have to get my brother to post on here. He’s never been much of an M5 convert in the past but just took my car down to Le Mans for the weekend and I’m now hearing all sorts of claims about wafting down in comfort, ferrying people around 5-up and then leading hoons with some serious machinery. Try doing that in a 520d FFS
