What's the point? Underwhelming performance with startling fuel consumption, and the potential for stupidly big bills. I could sort of see the appeal if the interior had the opulence/class of an ageing Jag or something, but the design really doesn't seem to have aged well.
There are so many other options available if you really do need the ability to go down a unpaved lane to your country retreat.

Are they that rare? I thought there were a good few of them around tbh
About 90% of them are diesels. Even the 2.7T is pretty rare.
The V8 is really appealing- I don't think I've ever seen one this cheap. They're actually very good off-road.
As noted, the big issue with them is air suspension, but there are aftermarket options for repair or replace.

The 2.7T version is ridiculously tuneable, if a little fragile in the ancillaries department.
With uprated turbos they can produce some silly power:

The 4.2 V8 in the S8 pumped out 360bhp - where did the missing 60bhp go?
The versions on the V8 in the S6 and S8 are different from those in the A6 and A8- can't remember all the specifics but from memory the valvetrain, intake, exhaust, cylinder heads and a few other bits are different.

Didn't the Subaru Outback pre-date this by a few years?

I recently bought a C6 one with the 4.2 FSI engine. Quite a beast.

I just started a thread about it:

Not for me thanks. The automotive equivalent of being seen wearing a pair of these:

Careful what you wish for: until I broke my ankle snowboarding Merrell Intercepts were only for outdoorsy, rough and tumble activities.

Now I wear them to work fairly regularly. Lovely comfy things.

Wouldn't want the Audi though, particularly in what appears to be the worst colour ever created.

So your choice of clothing and car you drive is based on what others may think about you rather than what's actually the best tool for the job?

A little shallow perhaps? wink

The Allroad is possibly the only classy looking car made by any of the German manufacturers these days.

I've had a couple.

A C5 V6 Bi-Turbo (which Mrs B.J.W still thinks is the nicest daily I've ever owned). I did have a bag or two go, but it was running 75,000 miles when I bought it and I was aware of the potential issues. It pulled like a train, was the most comfortable car to drive, practical and good off-road too. All things being equal, I don't think there is a better all-round car for the price (with the possible inclusion of the XC70). With winter coming the AWD will come into its own as well.

My current daily is a C6 Allroad 3.0 TDi. Not quite as supple as the C5 on the 18"s, but still a wonderfully comfortable place to be, and with lashings of optional wood trim, it feels a class above as well. Performance is strong; the only downside is that she (as with the C5) properly drinks the fuel in stop/stsrt traffic and around town. On a run, and at 80ish, I will get 45-47MPG all day long. I got bummed on the road tax (£540) because I wasn't paying attention. I even like the colour as well (Greeny Grey). We have a run to South Holland at the end of the month - looking forward to it.

15 years old, thirsty, not that powerful, a browny-grey cabin from the 90s...

What an absolute turd. £6k for that? I wouldn't pay shed money for it.

Really strong opinion there.

But I must admit I completely agree....

I can’t think of anything worse than one of these, wouldn’t pay a grand for it!

I used to love cars like these, old big German V8 estate but after my dads 51 plate E430 estate...the amount of stuff went wrong on it, not even big problems, but small ones, and because it was so rare, every part had to be ordered from Germany via MB. Nightmare

When this came out first I really wanted one but when I went to order it they had dropped the V8 for Canada where I live.

A bit of an odd choice admittedly but people will probably be having the same discussion about my new Panamera Sport Turismo Turbo in decades to come when they wonder what madman bought a V8 Porsche station wagon. Not a big seller. smile

Half the price could be an ok buy. Interior is horrible but I like the brown paint haha.
Think I'd rather go for an old ML500. I had one years ago and loved it.

Agreed about the price, 6 grand is a lot for a 15 mpg complicated 15 year old car

Don't know what you're smoking but 6.5k is at least 2k too much. The world has gone mental.

I have one ! 2008 4.2 FSI. (Newer C6 model with solar panel sunroof, cloth headlining, power everything, air supension, LED tail lights and DRL’s, flappy paddle gearbox and MMI)

It’s great! Effortlessly powerful with stock 360bhp ish, excellent V8 roar (engine dropped in from the S5) , looks good, goes well, sounds good, doesn’t handle like a boat either with Pilot Sport 4s, suprisingly with the Haldex, air suspension is super comfy and you can also put in to S-Line mode (dynamic). Cavernous boot, acres of legroom and it’s just like driving a mobile hotel with all the fully specced out gizmos! It cost me £11500 after I paid £2000 for some engine work, as well as a full service.

By golly it does drink fuel though, I drive it 20,000 miles a year and my lead foot means it averages between 9-14mpg, not to mention I fill it up with V-Power to keep it running well.

Lovely car, so much better than the old C5 borkmobile which is incredibly dated, and that price is crazy, when you can have a C6 for not much more. And this is bloody rare too!

i'm not sure what measurement system you use which means that "twice as much" is "not much more"...

10 years before this one, 5 years before the first Allroad. No V8, but the 3.0 flat 6 is nice.

Subaru probably don't spend as much advertising money with hay market as VAG though.
