Is this based on a Mondeo...?
No, platforn was developed for Lincoln LS(? - well one of them anyway), Ford Thunderbird, and Jaguar S-Type. It was potentially going to be used in one of the concept F-Type during it's time.Gameface said:
191mph my arse.
Jaguar are historically more conservative than most with their power and performance claims. As far back as 1948 they claimed that their XK 120 could achieve, unsurprisingly, 120 mph. When called out by the press and the "exotic" manufacturers, they showed that it would actually do 134 mph.

They may have been in the 1940s, but I'm sure I read somewhere that the E-Type that managed 150 mph had a higher compression engine than standard fitted and 3 carbs instead of 2! Anyway that S-Type R looks great.
For some reason I've liked them ever since I first saw one - maybe I should try one some time!

Do you really believe they would undersell their cars, or is it more likely they used a race spec engine for the press car.As far back as 1948 they claimed that their XK 120 could achieve, unsurprisingly, 120 mph. All early E-Types had 9;1 compression engines and 3 SU HD8 carbs; later US spec ones had 8:1 compression pistons fitted and 2 Stromberg carbs.Anyway that S-Type R looks great.

I didn't read that, I owned and drove them; 150 mph was a walk in the park for them, if a little light on the front.:-)

I've had an S-Type R for 3 years now, in the same black. Absolutely love it. A fantastic performance barge. I can waft along for good distances and feel fresh as a daisy at the other end, or have fun with it instead. It's not the quickest off the line and corners aren't its forte, as it's a heavy car, but the acceleration once rolling is amazing.
It throws the odd bill, which is to be expected, but nothing ruinous. The areas to look into mentioned in the article should be taken seriously, particularly the rust. I've had the sills replaced for example, a job which has seen many sent to the scrapyard.
Sadly, its days in my ownership are now numbered as I use it to commute to Birmingham City Centre and the introduction of the clean air zone means it'll cost me an anticipated £6 per day to drive in.

And TVR definitely fiddled with that infamous drag race Cerbera which Clarkson drove.
Last year I picked up a 110k Gold/moss covered 1999 S type languishing by the the roadside for £500 to smoke around in. Only a 3litre but attacted to the manual it gave 33mpg & when the box was stirred it went like Morse on speed! After new rubber, service, coil packs & shock bushes & a good scrub it came up mint. Whisper quiet over 70 fab ride/handle combo, vpractival. Gave me 12k without a further penny spent in 4months & sold for £1500. The point is there inherently good cars to live with. I think the brave pill is only for consumables if you use it a lot. I’ve taken the pill & owed a 2001 S8 for 10yrs &100k @23mpg now showing 240k. If it grenaded the S ‘R’ would be a worthy consideration imho.
I had one, 56 plate. Liked the performance, much less the mpg (13.9 was my usual average). I traded it in at 100k miles and around 9 years old for nearer half that that is being asked for in the article, but it did have some minor niggles and was due a service. It needed little major maintenance in my 6 years of ownership and there are plenty of independents around to deal with it, though part prices are never cheap. The spark plugs are due at 100k, not 30k, and the gearbox is “sealed for life” - though a change at 60-75k is probably appropriate.
