The badge on the back of a BMW hasn't always been a direct reflection of the engine capacity, this isn't "new" news.
It was for donkeys years except for the odd exception like the E28 525E. It's only in recent years this has changed, and to be fair it was always close can't remember said:

It's so people can have very ordinary engines but have a 30 badge, which 95% of people will think means it's 3 litre. I said on one of the other million threads about this that I bet there are people choosing Audis as company cars entirely because of the number on the back.
I let a rather attractive nurse in a S-line A3 out at a junction on Friday. I was very impressed that she had chosen a 3Ltr until I noticed the single exhaust pipe. A dead give-away as a 3ltr Audi would have at least 4 drain pipe sized exhaust trims. GTI16V said:
BMW have been bullstting for years, but in the other direction!
The E36 318i that's really a 2.0. The E28 525e that's really a 2.7. The E39 523 that's really a 2.5. The E39 540i that's really a 4.4
With regards to the Audi system: fk knows.
Well BMW did do it the other way for a while - I'd add the early E46 323i that was a 2.5 and the 320i that was a 2.2. Then the E60 323i and E89 23i that had a 2.5 engine.The E36 318i that's really a 2.0. The E28 525e that's really a 2.7. The E39 523 that's really a 2.5. The E39 540i that's really a 4.4

But now the 330i is a 2 litre 4-pot turbo so "330i" is pretty meaningless, and the "340i" is a 3 litre turbo - so it's not really that different to the Audi nonsense!

My neighbour just got an A4 4.0TDI (just seen it's actually 40TDI)
Assumed it must be some top spec cooking model.
Looked it up, nope it's a base spec A4.
Do you think he has chosen it to impress you or that he doesn't give a st about the number? Assumed it must be some top spec cooking model.

BILs other half was recently given a courtesy car from audi while hers was in for repair. It was an A3 30tdi and she was convinced it was a 3 litre! so marketing wise it will work for the majority of the population
Just bought a Q2 30tdi (1.6) for the Mrs, many people have commented on it being a 3 litre. I must admit I was fooled myself a few months back wondering when they started making a 4 litre diesel after a neighbour turned up in an A6 40tdi...

Now I've got a 330e company car, so far only 2 people have commented on the 3.0 engine it does't have, they could just be recalling the active hybrid though as that did have the 3.0 if i remember correctly
The BMW one I can work out, its the new Audi system that has too much of a variance of outputs within each band for my liking!
