RE: Nissan Pulsar GTI-R | Spotted
Discussion
Had the misfortune of owning one of these many, many years ago, I sold my (great) MR2 turbo and bought a GTIR, it was an abomination of poor build quality, terrible interior, chavy looks, bad handling and weak gearbox. I kept it all of 6 weeks before getting shot. I’ve owned many cars and this was the only one I really regret buying, I was so ashamed of it!
I drove a standard car once many years ago and was a bit underwhelmed.
There was a lot of talk about them at the time and maybe I was expecting too much.
I love the idea of them and the fact they are more left field.
Perhaps I should give one another go.
Not sure I could ever drop £20k on one though.
Didn't they have an umbrella in the door shut?

They were launched in 1990 though and as a hatchback, they were just ballistic compared with everything else at the time. My Dad had a 309 GTI then, which was a quick car but these were on another planet. There was a lot of talk about them at the time and maybe I was expecting too much.

2-3 years before the Escort Cosworth came along.
My God! That brought back memories.
Extract from my CV concerning the GTiR:
Contracted to Nissan Motorsports Europe Ltd. To design and produce instruction manuals for the manufacture of customer Group 'N' rally cars. Supplier quality audit and company quality procedures - 1991 to 1992.
What a great time it was, wonderful team and a super working environment. All day coffee and biscuits and the office craic. "You fkoffee" would echo across the office at least once an hour. We took it in turns.
I used to look forward to the journey to work (MK) and would set off in my SAAB 96 down the M1 knowing that I had the code for the Newprt Pagnall Services to get through the gate and save a few miles.
I had a day at Milbrook with the team and was treated to a ride around the rally circuit with Terry Kaby who did some development work on the Gp N car. He lost it on one corner, ended up in the long grass but recovered without drama. When we got back one of my colleagues said "I see you went off at Kaby corner!" It was a regular occurrence apparently.
I remember Stig Blomqvist being there at one point.
My first sight of the GTR which I believe was terrorising European Touring Car at the time and a sit in the cockpit of the Group C Nissan.
Thank you for the thread and allowing me to relive some special moments.

Fond memories, my first quick car.
It had a bleed valve fitted, or something, the standard clutch couldn't cope and slipped on full power.
I remember the engine producing an incredible amout of heat.
And those bonnet vents drove me mad, after washing the thing the water would run out of them, down the bonnet, for ages.
Drove a then OCD valeter crackers.
Had a noisy exhaust also, my first falling out with my neighbours.
A really great car in its day, not surprised a minter would command a high price nowadays.
How's getting spare parts these days?

The 16v Integrale was out even before 1990 though iirc and was a similar sort of 4wd rally inspired hatch 2-3 years before the Escort Cosworth came along.

I wonder if you ever met my friend Andy? He was a mechanic at NME in Milton Keynes when they rallied the GTi-R . Worked for Howard Marsden ( I think? )Extract from my CV concerning the GTiR:

I always thought these were very under-rated cars. Very quick out of the box for the time (faster accelerationg than an Escort Cossie) and I have an old Autocar from 1992 where Derek Warwick got one around Castle Combe faster than the then newish 964 Carrera. I think it may have come runner up that year to the winning Honda NSX. Great to see one, they look so tiny now co mepared with modern stuff. Its probably not all that much bigger than a VW Up!!
I remember that ( was from mid 91 - just as the GTI-R was launched over herePlus it inevitably got tested with the Delta and Escort
It is impressive to me that these still weighed very similar to the 200sx even with the added weight of 4wd. Usually 4wd ramps the weight up a fair bit.
I'm not exactly sure why but I've always loved these, I think that the rarity appealed to me and I was a fan of the engine anyway.
Iirc the intercooler was on top of the engine and I always thought that it was a strange place to put it.

Yes the I/c position was a big issue when they were developing the rally cars - more of an interwarmer!

I remember these looked really wild, from the out side, but it looks quite tame now.
This. My memory is telling me that these look mental. Other than the bonnet vent, it's about as exciting to look at as an Almera!Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
