If they're going to make a limited run version of this very car I guess it would count as production? Well done to all involved. SSC Tuatara must be crying into their beer about now...

You would think that someone who can design a car like that would know about Newton's third law.

Surely at 489kph, they'd want to hit 500kph, then get the pipe and slippers on.

Love the colour too.
Koenigsegg's was a customers car right?

Anyhow does it matter?

That was my first thought but the article goes on to state that they'll most likely make some limited edition examples of it. Although a quick Google suggests that Guinness state at least 50 mechanically identical vehicles available for sale have to be produced to qualify as a production car. I'm sure Bugatti could sell that many if they wanted to, but would they make them? I'd envisage them making more like 5...???

Amazing engineering
That is the only point, it's a showcase of what they can do. Nobody actually thinks the car will be doing 300mph, even 200mph on a regular basis.

Seemed to be only a matter of time for Bugatti. What an achievement though.

Needed James May at the wheel for extra brilliance.

I thought thinner air would mean less oxygen = less power, is that what you’re referring to?

That makes the GT40 that did it in a standing mile all the more impressive. It certainly wasn't a production car, but this one certainly wasn't either.

I mean yeah it doesn't really matter its still awesome, I was just asking if it counts or not, either way well done Bugatti. Imagine how quickly the scenery must be passing at that speed. biggrin

What's the stopping distance from 300, something like 4,500 feet?

What a feat of engineering.

I wonder where it will stop? I can't realistically see any car broaching the 350mph mark
The physics involved would be mental and consider that at 300mph is the cruising speed of many air craft!

I imagine Koenigsegg could have done this previously if they had use of the same track.

The turbochargers can compensate to an extent. They can overspeed to produce the boost required, as long as they don't hit their own limits. Given that drag is so much more important than power, this makes a big difference. See F1 cars at Mexico City last few years and their top seeds despite running near-Monaco levels of wing.

I see they forgot the old 'fold the door mirrors in for an extra 10mph' trick.

While it is impressive, it does matter that it's a genuine production car.

Without the production restriction, it's just a bespoke vehicle (ie land speed record), and they went over 300mph in the 1930s!

Of course it's all a bit of a grey area these days as it'd be easy to find 50 people to buy a build of this and never actually use them in real (ie production) conditions.

Very impressive stuff. The record will no doubt be beaten in time, but to be the first to achieve it, is the bigger achievement.

Bit pointless as a road car, but still very very impressive.

Yeah make sense, he said it had more to go so surely 312mph is possible.

Then pipe, slippers and change of under crackers!
