RE: Next AMG C63 to go four-cylinder

Surely, SURELY, this is a wind-up? A C63 (like an M3 and RS4) is a petrolheads choice, smacked with extra tax, lower economy and more expensive insurance - where is the case for not just buying a C350 or the like if it's "just" a 4pot / fake exhaust popping.
I shall quietly roll my C63 back into the garage and keep quiet.

C’mon, you know it’ll be the loudest yet in order to appeal to the certain type of attention-seekers that thinks these generic fart pop 4-bangers sound good. I consider myself very lucky to own a CLS63 which I personally think has the positives the C63 had without the shoutiness. I'm too old for that without looking like a nob (more than normal haha).

Don’t believe Audi won’t be next at this, I’d expect the new gen of S models to have 4 pots.

Its like when the Council say they are putting Council tax up by 10 percent and these is much wailing and gnashing of teeth, so when the actual 5 percent increase comes out, everyone sort of accepts it with a minor grumble,
Bet the next C63 will be more powerful C53 unit with some hybrid stuff.
An 18 plate C63 coupe came in the works car park today, sounded ace, hmm 30 grand entry level for the turbo models and the earlier 6.3, plenty of choice at 14/15, is it me or is that a hell of a car for the money ? notwithstanding the knobhead ownership some got, but they seem to have moved on a bit now.

There's no way you'd use a low voltage boosting system (48V) on an engine and also have a high voltage traction assist as well.
Why would you bother to boost the engine when you can 'boost' the wheels directly with the traction motor. Cheaper, more efficient, more powerful. The engine will be their to "make the noise" and the eMAchine to "make it go"..........
To get close to the current C63S, (500 bhp & 700 Nm) the 4 cyl (415 bhp & 500 Nm) you need about 100 bhp and 200 Nm at peak, but more like 200bhp and 300 Nm if you look at total area under the curve. That sort of level of additional boosting is not available from just 48V.

You know what I want to see? Porsche had it right with the 918. I want to see a car that runs on electric some of the time, with a big honking performance V8 as a “range extender” or for when you want max performance including aural pleasure.

I can't see this happening as it leaves so little room for 45, 55 (Or whatever the nomenclature is). As impressive as Mercedes tuning of 4 pots is, There's no way they would be able to make it that much more powerful than the lower models without throttling them significantly.

I suspect that's very much the plan, but I still think we'll see the i6 in the C-class. When they facelifted the C43 and kept the V6, I i wondered why they didn’t put the i6 in from the E53 without the EQ booster but I think it’s to make the upcoming i6 seem more exclusive in the next C63 installation

I'm with you on that. I actually quite like the appeal of an electric motor giving the car some extra shove. Perhaps in the same way a forced induction engine works. A hybrid-V8 could be the best of both worlds! Runs on four cylinders/electric assist on a cruise or round town, put your foot down and get the full whack.
