RE: Bentley Flying Spur | The Brave Pill
Discussion
A friend of a friend bought a 2012 model this year from a main dealership which came with a comprehensive warranty. Shortly after purchase he went on a tour to Austria where the car died. He was offered a fiat panda to get to Munich airport but the fella is a rather tall and heavy lad. After more than 3 weeks of being home the car had still not been repatriated. Sedgy, if you're reading, we'd love to hear the end of this 😂
From the sideview it actually looks like my MK1 Rover 75, no bad thing the first gen Rover 75 is a fine looking machine (even the Italians said so)
Ok close up the quality will be a lot better on the Bentley, but if my 75 needs a part it'll be less than £100, on the Bentley you would be lucky if it was under a grand.
I see a few for sale near me one at £23k which has done well over 100k miles

Jeez I had no idea these were this cheap!
Sounds like BS to me. It’s a run of the mill ZF 6HP box as found in virtually everything from a contemporary A4/3-series and up. W12 installations need part of the exhaust dropping to get the appropriate access, but it’s Audi A8/Phaeton/ZF 6HP procedure and fluids all the way.Augustus Windsock said:
Must admit I was wondering about the exhaust but I guess it would be a feasible option as an OEM zone is bound to attract ‘Bentley tax’.
Can anyone clarify on that 10 year service, as I’m wondering how much is charged to drain and refill gearbox oil?
Is it that it needs the whole transmission dropping to change it or that the position of the drain and fill plugs require the sort of manual dexterity only available to humans with arms and hands like Dobble the house elf...?
No, take it to a gearbox specialist and they will be able to pump the oil out. Cost is around £3-400 IIRC.Can anyone clarify on that 10 year service, as I’m wondering how much is charged to drain and refill gearbox oil?

They can be diagnosed with any VAG diag tool like VCDS, and most of the behind the scenes oily bits, suspension, parts and Ecu’s are interchangeable with A8/Phaeton bits. Where you can’t blag that is bodywork and interior bits and pieces. Those are bespoke to Bentley and attract an appropriate price tag to suit.
Good Lord you need super special brave pills with a dollop of added bravery-nessness. I cannot stress just how expensive these are to fix . The engine is sooo tightly packed it makes an XJS engine bay look easily accessible. Electrics will fail, usually all at once , I had an abs sensor go on the brake pedal and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and loss of power, the cruise control suddenly gained its own intelligence on the m4 and wouldnt switch off as instructed ,cel light flashed on then a misfire appeared then it all sorted itself out and then it happened all over again the next day .Parts £12.99 Labour £1170 as Bentley refused to fix it without first doing a compulsory 2 hour inspection then all the belts needed changing .... Then the maf sensor went and then the rear air shock collapsed. 1k to fix. If you pencil in 4-5k a year in maintenance bills that should just about cover it . Maybe...

This is why I'd always go for a Mercedes S-Class if I were considering this sort of car - the engineering is a good deal more solid and (crucially) there are a huge number of indies out there who know the product really well and can offer solutions at a fraction of the cost of the main dealer (SBC as an example). Even an S65 won't cost you £4-5k per annum in maintenance bills, and I'd say that it's every bit as good as the Bentley, and way better in certain areas.ES335 said:

Nah - an Avensis! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Toyota_Ave...sandysinclair said:

Scary stuff.Edited by sandysinclair on Monday 21st October 14:42
You've convinced me. I'll avoid.
Well I did genuinely love ,somewhat ironically, the way it was built, out of solid granite, but I was spending at the same rate as the Murcielago I ran as a daily and that chucked up £23k in bills in 2 years which worked out at £1per mile in maintenance and that had had £88k spent on it since that was first registered, so wisely didn't reaaaallly want to repeat that again with the B.. Lol.
