RE: Lotus Carlton | Spotted
Discussion
Always always wanted one.
I pass one most mornings in Leaves Green near Biggin Hill airport going out towards Westerham. Clearly a daily driver (driven by a chap certainly in his later years) and did manage to remember the reg one day and checked it out - was on something like 177,000 miles with a HUGE history.
Now has a dent in the door and is obviously properly used. See a classic Esprit, same sort of colour occasionally at the same sort of time and wonder if they're the same owner.
Also, was going to Goodwood MM a few months ago, early doors on the M25 in a C4S, not travelling especially slowly the same car came HAMMERING past, squatting on the rears and just fked off out of sight in seconds. Superb.

Why has that article plucked the performance figures out of a hat? Wouldn't it have been sensible to have used the real ones?
No Idea where they got them from. From memory: 377bhp, 419 lbs ft
These prices are a piss take. A couple of years ago they were 50k absolute max for a sorted low mileage one. Just because one seller puts one up at 100k , now they all are. Cretins.

I always enjoyed reading the PC test where they showed the timing slip printout.‘Rain Stopped Play’ was probably my favourite article on them though.
‘Gruntcarlt’!!!

Are some people actually paying the crazy prices advertised these days or are the cars being sold for much lower? I want to see the thread "I've just bought a Lotus Carlton for 95k". I don't think I will see such a thread though.

£95K sure, in this crazy world this seems to be excellent value in comparison to other, lesser mortals. This is an iconic saloon, maybe THE iconic saloon and I just wish I'd have taken the plunge when they were more affordable and kept it for high days and holidays, appreciating nicely in a dry warm garage when I wasn't using it.
I was put off a little by the spares availability, dubious history of some cars, the unique, hard to find Lotus designed parts and stopping tea-leaves taking it and torching it after ragging it rotten.
If I had the funds it would definitely be part of my fantasy garage and possibly driven a lot more often than some of the others. Big thumbs up from me.

WTF! £150k !!!!!!It’s an icon, sure, but that’s beyond insane.
I wouldn't buy one for £30k, let alone that price.
They're a hot version of a junk car. They're not a looker. They aren't put together very well. A friend of mine had one many years ago.
Very quick in it's time. Not so much now, especially considering what you could buy with that money today.
No matter how much faster or rare it is, it's still a souped up Vauxhall repmobile. I'd imagine every non-Lotus Carlton of that vintage has long since been scrapped.

I had the MD of my local independent Vauxhall dealers offer to sell me his personal LC for about 17ish grand back in the mid-2000s
I ignored his advice, and bought a diesel Vectra instead
The LC would have probably been on my drive for less than a month before some scrote nicked it, but it's still the closest I come to regretting not buying a car...

After the BMW E30 325i that sold at auction a couple of weeks ago for £51k this doesn’t seem that outrageous.
