RE: MOTs given automatic six-month extension

Which is great but...
Mine expires on the 28th and was booked in for a test. BoJo made his announcement Monday and the garage I was booked in with promptly cancels all tests and closes for business until further notice.
I'm now caught in no-mans-land of being unable to get a test in before my MOT runs out and outside of the criteria for automatic extension.
Pity they didn't set the date to include from BoJo's announcement.

exact same situation, expires 29th, 1 day short! Unsure what to do nowMine expires on the 28th and was booked in for a test. BoJo made his announcement Monday and the garage I was booked in with promptly cancels all tests and closes for business until further notice.

Mine says mot due july 2020 still. Whats the end of the time scale for extension?
It says 12 months on the BBC item and here too:https://metro.co.uk/2020/03/25/drivers-granted-six...
Most people will get an MoT when they can I expect (especially as some treat it as a safety inspection too and never check anything on their car )but it gives breathing room.
Personally I have a car MoT that runs out in winter so I can leave it a while if the weather is awful.

If your car MOT expires in the winter, my understanding is that your MOT is only extended if it's due between 30th March and 30th September.

This happened to me too. Managed to get it booked into another local garage on Monday, and if it really comes to it Halfords are staying open. Mine expires on the 28th and was booked in for a test. The 12 months reference presumably is used as that would be for a car with an MOT due on 30th September as they have until 30th March 2021 to get it tested.

If that's the case, then the measure would be 'in place' for only 6 months wouldn't it? Not 12 months as announced. If your car MOT expires in the winter, my understanding is that your MOT is only extended if it's due between 30th March and 30th September.
You'd have the strange situation of a car who's MoT runs out in mid September getting an extension til March 2021, over 5 months later than a car who's MoT runs out on 1st October!

I think the odd scenario you set out is a reality of the extension.
Happy to be corrected!
DfT have posted more on this now. It is as I described:

You do not need to do anything to extend your vehicle’s MOT expiry date if it’s on or after 30 March 2020. However, you must keep your vehicle safe to drive.
Your vehicle will be automatically given a 6-month MOT exemption. This will extend your current MOT expiry date by 6 months.
This to me reads as;
If you MOT expires on or after the 30th March 2020, all vehicles will receive a 6 month extension. If you have a car due in January 2021 like myself, I am expecting that to be July 2021 now. All the guidance says you'll be given a 6 month extension after 30 March automatically, doesn't have a date to on it.

You are correct. They could have made this much clearer. Your situation is an example of how generous the system will be for people whose MOT isn't due for a while.ro250 said:

Agreed, the GOV site isn't very clear where the AA said from 30 March 2020 for 12 months. So in theory, we are going to have MOT stations quiet from now until October time technically, as peoples MOT are pushed out. In a way I'm glad for our main car as that was due it's first MOT on 30th May but now gives me a bit longer (although I will put it in before November to be honest, as too close to christmas)The other car is my shed, so obviously I'm quite pleased it has a longer MOT now even though mechanically it's sound and I always keep my cars looked after.
Mine ran out earlier this month, its been sat on the drive since, as I've been working on it to remedy some minor issues such as a wiper motor and wheel bearing, which will be sorted in the next few days once final parts arrive.
I won't be able to get it booked in before 30th.
Where do I stand I wonder?
