Surely there are many good quality aftermarket items available for much less and have been for ages?

I've been wanting a Porsche head unit with modernised internals for the 996 forever! Just a pity it's not a bit more in keeping with the surroundings.

Contrary to popular opinion I think the interior has aged and weathered a lot better than the gen1 997. Certainly in the examples I went to look at, but the stereo & nav does date the 996 terribly. I'd love good hands free and DAB in the car.

Does it work with the Bose upgrade system where all the connections are optical connectors?

Of course, as has been pointed out earlier on this thread. And these items for sale by Porsche are probably no more than those aftermarket items with a Porsche badge and some slight redesign of the plastics so they blend in nicely with the period Porsche dashboards.

However Porsche have never been slow to recognise a marketing opportunity and are not known for their low prices. The replies on this thread suggest that they will sell nicely.

Fully agree,I always thought the 996 interior was nice and much nicer looking than the 997.1. I especially like the 996 without the double din unit and with the Centre console delete - looks as good as can be for a modern car imo

At last! This could make all the difference to a 997 Gen 1 - to take your mind off the bore scoring and IMS...

I think it’s great that the manufacturer is supporting enthusiasts who run older Porsche’s like this.

Bravo Porsche!

For me part of the appeal of the classics is an escape from all this tech. It's so refreshing to not be told I've forgotten my mobile when I leave my car! Or to be pinged emails when you're supposed to be concentrating on driving. There's screens and apps everywhere in life. Don't need them in my air cooled 911.
Spend it on maintenance instead smile
This!

Despite having DAB in mine I rarely listen to it, why bother when you have that air cooled engine!

I had a Pioneer unit put into my Range Rover P38. It's single DIN but with with a pop-out screen. Cost me about the value of the car (well, £800) but well worth it for connectivity and Apple CarPlay.

Great idea. Sure it’s expensive but it’s from Porsche so what did you expect? Besides cheaper options would look a bit Halfords in a well kept Porsche. Hats off to them for looking after their older models. Maybe Porsche are dipping their toe towards an official resto business, given the glutton of non Porsche resto companies.

Probably from the same factory that brought you this, but with a crinkle front fascia....

My 996 has had a similar Pioneer unit in it for many years- I wondered until now why Porsche never did their own version.

Are these really petrolheads commenting on all this technology?
The cars are classic.
The background noise of the exhaust is all that is needed.

That is awesome! I'd have loved that in my 996 for sure and it's something that did annoy me not having that seamless solution for bluetooth/DAB , especially while retaining the OEM look.

Hats off to them and makes complete sense, I think they'll sell quite a lot of these so second hand market will probably pick up a bit too.

One thing that always made it hard was the BOSE Fibre optic system, if this can cope with that then that's also a huge hurdle overcome and partly justifies getting it over something from Alpine for example with an expensive adapter - just buy this porsche for a one in all solution

It is a lot of money but it's not overly expensive. If that makes sense? I looked at upgrading the iDrive in my car as it's fairly basic, satnav works fine but bluetooth is only for calls. But if you're keeping it OEM, even just adding in things like music streaming & updating to the newer iDrive you can be anywhere from £700 - £2000 depending on what options you go for.

If you've an older Porsche you're going to keep for a good length of time, I'd say it would be worthwhile if it's a mint/oem by the book car.

Great to see manufacturers catering for the older cars. Both units look good. For a single din I would be going for the Blaupunkt though.

Great idea, nice to see Porsche creating these kind of things for the older gen cars.

Obviously for those that want to keep more of the OEM look/Porsche cred's, suspect most will just op for an aftermarket unit and integrate at far lower cost but as said, good to have the option.

With my 997, I have just added a bluetooth module behind it to keep the original OEM look but may come around to the idea of changing it when I get fed up using my phone for maps and ignoring the clunky built in system (even with the latest maps e.t.c)

The single DIN unit looks great to my eyes.
