This is what we're told. But go over there and that's not how it looks at all.

I spend (well spent, given the current situation) quite a bit of time working in Shanghai and all I notice is huge numbers of 'western' cars in odd configurations - fancy a long wheelbase A4 or 3-series, anyone?

None of the locally made stuff has the bizarrely huge grilles now being foisted on us.

The grill looks a lot better in black than the silvery starry pattern ones of the other models.

The arches do look weedy as somebody else said, it's a shame that it isn't a slightly bigger version of the excellent M2.

No, they have models specifically tailored to that market. Stop giving them excuses. "Oh but China made them do it..."

It's lardy, curves-intersecting-everywhere lump with big nostrils because that's what the exterior designers wanted.

What does this provide, dynamically, over an M2? Absolutely nothing. It's all about ego and that's what's reflected in the design. "Look at me I can afford an M4". Wouldn't want it to be mistaken for a lower-tier model ...

I'm guessing it will be just like the last one, with a bit more power and bugs bunny's teeth on the front.

Yes, as I've heard - in China, the longer your wheelbase the more important you are. Not sure if the grille thing is a product of that.

As I mentioned earlier, the UK is brand obsessed to the point where we willfully buy hideous cars because they look like a german marque (GLE coupe, X6 to name a few.) Before all this covid nonsense, the new Supra and Alpine A110 were selling less than 100 cars a month.. combined! Us 'prestige obsessed' Brits just walk over to the porker showroom and hand over our money.

I assume you have driven both back to back to come to that conclusion?

I know, my comment will be the 9 millionth about the grill, but here we go:

Why??????

Yes, I know it is to appeal to the Chinese market, but why do we have to look at it here in Europe????
BWM used to do such good looking cars. Subtle, good looking - by no means 60's Ferrari gorgeous granted - but just honest, good cars with the look to go alongside.

This is just wrong, on so man levels.

What a truly bizarre post.

Everyone who drives an E-class over a C-class or an A-class Mercedes does so because of ego?
Everyone who drives an A5 or an A4 over an A3 or an A1 Audi does so because of ego?
Everyone who drives a 5-series or 4-series or a 3 series over a 2-series or 1-series does so because of ego?
Everyone who buys an M4 over an M2 does so because of ego?

Ridiculous.

I would buy an M2 over the current M4 for the purely subjective reason that I much prefer the way the M2 looks. I can afford both. Everyone has a different reason to choose the cars they buy.

Well that looks underwhelming and a bit st! Far too close to a boggo 4. Where are the wheel arches and bonnet bulge? Pretty disappointing given that list will probably be £70k

I think a UK number plate will rescue the front end look a tad.

I've never been less interested in a new M car, makes me sad.

fk me that's tragic. Looks like a joke version of an oil crisis-era Trans Am.

Again - one can hope in Alpina.

Mainly because as enthusiasts we talk a lot more than we buy cars, unfortunately. I've always thought the Z3M was ugly and still do, and I will continue to point and laugh at BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE 'Coupe' owners, but sadly they have the money to buy those hideous cars and I do not.
In my case, they have lost a sale based on the hideous looks. I was toying with the idea of a new M440i when they launch the Gran Coupe, but if the front end is anything like the coupe then it#s a no go.

Probably not a huge loss for BMW, as I am likely to just go for the M340i instead.

Absolute howler from BMW - and I love M Cars. 2 things:

1. There are some amazing deals on M4s on the classifieds where dealers have had to take on stock- £40k for a brand new M4 and £45k for the Comp - there's over 30 out there with delivery mileage - very tempting to bag a bargain!

2. this was the perfect opportunity to use this styling for the front - which would have been amazing! I really wish they had made this car.

I quite like it, has no one noticed the GTS style bonnet vents? there's noticeable width to the chassis when you look at the extension away from the headlights. not sure i'm keen on multi spoke wheels on M cars though
