Wow nice reply. Thanks - based on what. When buying any car I’d kinda expect it to be there, during a weekend when people would be coming in to look at cars. I thought that was why garages were there? Not a place where the sales people can take them home when they want to?
Anecdotal, but I've heard the weekend was when time wasterspeople test drive cars for fun

They didn't 'lose' a sale though did they? They just didn't sell it to you. I'm utterly certain that they still sold the car and they're probably OK with that given that someone who refuses to buy a car just because it's not at the dealership be it out on extended test or with a sales person is probably going to be a royal pain to deal with.
This^

If we have cars that have fuel in the tank we'll use it until its down to a quarter or until its sold. If the cars out usually a customer is quite happy to wait until its on site, I've never had anyone refuse to buy or just walk away because its not there to view immediately..

It was more of the fact that we’d rung twice before and to be told that it wouldn’t be in but such is life. Basically instead of buying, say a 1 owner car, it’s a two owner car because someone is using it regularly.

Just got back from looking at the rivals - GLC 63S etc. All very nice!
What possible difference does it make whether one owner or two??
Its how well a car has been looked after and overall condition.
One owner means nothing. One really bad careless owner or three fastidious owners?

Its way they drive them too- saw a second hand R8 being ragged around town near me by sales manager. Then when at dealership saw him revving it quite hard from cold.... painful to watch!
Because owners never do that

I guess you've bought that instead then? As you said the other dealer had lost the sale.

Surely you would take car home that has a duplicate on the forecourt to save any issues?

If you only have one X3 but five 3series then you should take a middle spec 3 series to save these issues.

If you've booked to view and drive a specific vehicle, I can understand being annoyed if it's not there. Otherwise, no, and if it's the sort of thing you'd kick off about, I wouldn't want someone that irrational as a customer.

I think this is a perception problem. The underling that you spoke to probably view their manager as a deity in their corporate entity, possibly someone they aspire to be if they sell enough cars. Whereas in your mind he's just another bell-end in a suit who has unnecessarily put another thousand miles on the car.

Its how the situation is managed. A potential enquirer is expecting to see a car , if its not there then its a negative. If I was told by the salesperson that it was out on an extended demo or that a customer had been loaned it because their car could not be serviced/fixed on time then its sounds a helluva lot better than ' a member of staff has borrowed it for the weekend' at that point the situation sounds very reasonable, appointment is booked and actually potential enquiry might go away thinking that these people care a bit more about their customers from a service POV.

There's a good chance it's his company car at the moment so he's using it every day. As with all dealers your demo car is always listed as for sale
Sounds sensible. If you're a car dealer it saves having cars exclusively for use of your staff. If someone buys it, just grab another one from the stock.
Exactly that. A friend of my sister's works at the local BMW dealership, she had a 220 convertible up until a couple of weeks ago when a customer came in after that car in the spec her demo was in... 2 days later she had a new Z4 instead just because that was available

They can thrash the st out of cars then sell them on. It's a free car and a perk.

Not as bad when we went to a Audi dealer, booked a appointment to drive a specific A3, a 1.5 auto saloon with the comfort suspension which they said they had

Got there, oh the salesman is with a customer, 45 mins later he comes over, so we haven’t got a saloon or auto to show you how about we take you out in this hatchback which is manual and also has the S line suspension, so not the car you want at all

Got in it, it was the receptionists car and the back was full of child’s toys and had yougurt smeared in the seats

He was shocked when he didn’t get the sale!

Another Audi dealer obliged perfectly.

On another occasion my sister wanted to try a 1.5TSI Ibiza, the dealer said they had one, turned up, oh sorry it’s not here, how about you try the 1.0?
They also didn’t offer any discount

Used car wow, got £3500 off another Ibiza from a dealer that had a 1.5 to drive too.

It’s not hard to do things properly and yet the fk it up so much?

I fully understand that cars are used by dealer staff and that they have days off etc.

But some people on here don't get that if you've arranged an appointment to see/test drive a particular car then why fob people off with a different model. If you are looking to buy the demo model then you want to see the demo model to see if the alloys are trashed, any scrapes and damage etc.

Here's a new one: If a salesman doesn't want to sell you a car why not just say: "Look, I won't book the appointment because in all likelihood I can't be arsed to make sure the car is here. Good day!"

I have a number of dealerships and use a company car for around 6 months, but is sometimes used as a demonstrator and sales guys use it occasionally to take if they need and estate or bigger car for whatever reason - like tip runs etc. Once the 6 months up it is then retailed as an ex-management car. I'm thinking of buying my next car as handed over more responsibility to staff so spend less time there.

I've lost count the number of cars I've had so no point in filling out the garage.

If there is a customer in wants the car we'll sometimes take it to them, particularly if they've bought from us before. Otherwise make an appointment and the car will be there ready for you to test drive/buy(!)

Eh? No it isn't.

In that case, my Audi is a 15 "owner" car because all my family and mates have driven it despite only my name ever being on the logbook.
