A former neighbour had a Mondeo 1.8 estate, with over 240,000 miles. The engine had never had any work and there was just a tiny puff of blue smoke on start up.

I did 150k in my Saab 900 in just three years. Had plenty of life in it.

I took a BMW E39 528i to 205,000 miles. It was in great shape until I reversed it along a dry stone wall at 50 mph.
My current BMW E38 728i is on 201,000 miles and I stay away from walls these days cool

We have the same engine! smile

I have to say that I drove mine VERY hard when I first bought it.... it was bought through my company and I drove in and out of London every day for decade - at some quite silly speeds at 5.30am. When I sold the company I bought the car as I'd never had any issues with the engine it - and never have had. I'd had two XKR's previously.

Keep an eye on the rubber seal around the tailgate - worth checking that at least annually. Water in the boot is not great for the electronics. That was the only issue I had - but resolved without issue.

My 2003 Honda Accord Type-S (2.4 petrol) a few weeks before the bottom end started knocking.

Made it to 278k before I had another engine put in it!

I would take my chances on a big petrol over a modern diesel for longevity.

My first car, 1.2 Polo petrol is now on 230,000 miles.

I bought a 3.0 XJ which had 170,000 and was fine. I know someone who has two petrol XJs with 270,000 & 300,000 miles!

Diesel, petrol. Matters little. Maintenance is key. We are a throw away society and have a second hand car market that promotes chopping and changing due to just how attainable cheap vehicles are.

I lived in Australia for a period and overall car residuals were much better (not cheap) and people tended to stick with something and pay to keep it on the road. My petrol Pajero had 340,000km on.

Some marques actually have high mileage owners clubs with plenty of petrol driving owners.
I've never had a car at 200k miles but I worked with a chap who had a petrol Volvo from new that did such interstellar mileage (and cherished the car) that Volvo bought it back to keep in their collection. I think it was beyond 300k or 400k miles.

Yep - mines a Range Rover supercharged.... but I'd had two XKR's previously, which have the same engine.

I did it in a 328i E36. The engine was the only decent thing about it.

Rust killed it.

I remember a mate doing 317k in a Montego 2.0 SI.

It didn’t have any engine work done to it but at that millage it dropped a valve, and that was the end of that.

My 9-5 aero is on 179k on its original engine and is still going strong...I don't drive it gently either, previous owner was the same but the car has never missed a service etc

A friends old 9000 was on 200k on an unopened engine, we proceeded to stick a bigger turbo on it. Thing went for another 30-40k before rust claimed the shell, I still have the engine somewhere I think.

My last Volvo , a 2000 V70 T5 got to over 293,000 miles before it was written off .
The engine, clutch, gearbox were absolutely original.

Golf MK5 GTI on 170k.. Running perfectly and barely burns any oil. Regular oil changes and cam chain replaced recently, runs spot on. DSG also which will scare a few people off come resale time.

I went in a Toyota Avensis minicab with 480k on the clock, then a few days later another that was at 750k

Both around 2005 models, looked and felt almost like new, in 2010/2012

Plenty of cars in Spain with far more, they do much bigger distances there, there are quite a few on sale now at www.milanuncios.es with over 500k and 600k kms, with no mention of rebuilds or engine changes
