But...compared to BMW's this is a utilitarian car with one purpose...to go off road and be good at it. The design is an after thought and is not a selling point. So why does it have a billboard sized chrome grille, fake exhausts and pillbox windows?

Pill box windows... Probably safety legislature.Big Chrome grille...probably does not cost much more in the manufacture process same as exhaust trim.
They have to jazz it up a little bit.

Out of the box this is certainly pretty ugly. But most people who use them properly don’t leave them in that state. In Oz, where they are ridiculously popular, it’s not uncommon for them to be driven straight from the dealers to an aftermarket company (often ARB) to get better suspension, wheels, lift kits, wheel carriers, winches, snorkels etc etc. Then they look good and function like nothing else. If you want one vehicle to handle anything (except a race track), the Landcruiser is it

Have you seen the current offerings from Land Rover ?At least this looks like a 4x4 And without doubt will be capable and not that it matters to your average Land Rover buyer , reliable!!

The current one is incredibly capable out of the box. I did a tour of Fraser Island in one - stock standard, even (mismatched) road tyres and it was unstoppable.The only issue with the new one may be no V8 - prices of current shape V8s are climbing in Australia.

What are you on about? The entire LR/RR range are really good looking vehicles, if you perhaps ignore the offset rear plate on the Discovery. The blacked-out Defender near me is a well-judged mix of rugged and premium.
