Modifying to be illegal?
Discussion
Sounds like the recent or current attempt to ban pattern parts and force people to use expensive OEM parts.

People modify more than just exhausts you know...
I’ll throw everyone under the bus if it gets rid of s with loud exhausts. Sorry - but that’s they way it is - blame the selfish modding “community”, be it dheads with crappy A3s, “screaming eagle” Harleys or sports bikes. I’m not immune to this myself - I do own a 60th Anniversary R1 with an OE Akra. I’m very aware of who I might be disturbing though.

You want to ban everything because you are so affected by noise, yet you have modified your bike to make more noise
That is the most idiotic post I've ever seen

banning all modifications would have a serious negative impact on motorsport. Races just with standard OEM cars? dont be silly.
Also the car modification industry is worth millions and employs 10's of thousands who may loose their jobs.
If the reasoning is to stop chav types running decats and dangerous camber/suspension mods etc then legislation is already in place for that and at best, just needs revision slightly to make prosecution easier.
Banning or requiring certification of modifications will never apply to track-only racers. Also the car modification industry is worth millions and employs 10's of thousands who may loose their jobs.

But better control of the free-for-all boyo road market does make sense.

I haven't modified anything to make more noise, and I never would. I'm not an antisocial tt.You want to ban everything because you are so affected by noise, yet you have modified your bike to make more noise

My bike came like that brand new.

why?we already have legislation around sound levels / safety / etc.
our current legislation is end result focused - do what you want as long as the end result is safe / within limits / etc.
this proposal is detail focused - we the manufacturer / government will decide the detail of what you will be allowed to do
in most parts of our lives we are no longer controlled in the detail once we are past about the age of 3 - this is all about control - it is not about safety - that is already in place and working
Blanket bans on modification would be a fun one to word; Where is the line drawn on customisation / "tampering"?
What level of certification would be required for pattern parts to meet the standard? - Or is it OEM Parts only?
I'm not opposed to some level of regulation, however I'd say the UK is already at a happy medium where it's relatively easy to modify a car without jumping through too many TUV-like hoops, whilst it is still illegal to make more dubious changes such as decats.

This needs opposing because the mission creep will be horrendous.
I find it wrong that some local grass chewers mod their pick-ups to do that ‘no smoke no poke’ thing.
But they’ll slip under the radar & someone ‘normal’ will get hammerd because they put a manual box in their automatic 540i 6 years ago even though they used factory parts off a breaker to do it.
Next thing it’s full main dealer history or no MOT because clunky government won’t be able to make it work any other way & the industry lobby will push it to get us all changing cars every 3 years.
Because environment.

Do we not already have regulations for noise from exhausts? There seems to be a trend of wanting to introduce new legislation to combat problems that could be solved by enforcing existing legislation.
Yes and it's pretty much only enforced at CruisesAgreed - if anyone read the proposals they are trying to enforce OEM parts only
I can see why they want to reduce the number of people removing Cats / DPF but perhaps if they made them work better and forced the OEM to sell replacements at cost would be more helpful
When I had a Starion - the exhaust rotted, OEM cost was more than the value of the car, I replaced with a standard aftermarket system, noise was similar, these proposals would have meant scrapping the car

Mods that remove emissions control hardware (DPFs, cats, silencers etc) are already banned. Surely it's easier to enforce rules that already exist?
Also, seems like it's always lads in modified hot hatches that get the st but tbe much worse problem is nonces in diesel BMW X6s and blacked out Rangers who gut the exhausts and drive around belching out toxic smoke. Those s are far bigger dheads than any number of chavs in hot hatches or bikers.

Many customised vans have wheels rated below the van's load capacity. Many modified cars and vans have wheels of incorrect offset which compromises dynamics. Loud exhausts. Pop and bang calibration. Catalyst deletion. Perhaps stricter controls in Germany is part of the reason for unlimited autobahns whilst we crawl along at 70mph or less
I'd rather have 70 limits and be able to modify my cars. There's already laws covering most dangerous and/or antisocial modifications; we don't need more rules, we just need the ones we've got enforced properly.

And we have legislation to cover all of those except possibly pop-bang maps and even then they still have to pass emissions, we already have it - it just needs enforcing. You can thank knee-jerk gov/brake/lobbyists/newspapers for the 70mph limit on motorways rather than modified cars.

As an aside, not wishing to sully a conversation with facts, the Screaming Eagle Harleys you hate would be unaffected by this as they are an OEM modification, just like your Akra.

Explain how my wider wheels with positive offset have compromised the dynamics, they have improved them albeit at a inconsequential increase in leverage upon various parts - presumably you have accident stats to back up what a huge problem this is ?
We crawl along to keep Brake and the Greens happy

Thank fk for that, no more Saxo's with dustbin exhausts either - bring it on!
Agreed - needs to be applied retrospectively as wellToo many anti-motorist, anti-car, anti-fun, anti-young, pro-green alarmists on here. If they have such a dislike for cars, engines and driving fun then surely this is not the forum they would want to be wasting time on. Mumsnet and other forums are available.
