I agree with the top vote. The CSL is really special imo. It still looks great today!
It’s definitely becoming peak CSL era!

That M3 CSL was definitely a high watermark for BMW. Will they ever build anything as good again?

Only 3000 votes from the UK's most diehard collective M aficionados? You are just a tiny tiny sample of BMW buyers, your voice is not loud enough and collectively your pocket is not deep enough...hence BMW now designs and markets cars to the tastes of the Chinese, Middle East and Asian markets.
Precisely.
It’s about pockets and maybe age. Maybe ones own age influence the opinion about half a century time line.
But yes, polling is a nice thing.

What, no X5M or X3M getmecoat

Seriously, I think E46 M3 CS is top of the bunch, as I m a ludite and love a good "manuel"!!

As a E39 M5 owner for 15+ years, I am biased, and still think best all round car BMW ever made, if family duties involved.

The E60 M5, takes prize for best engine.

Z4m should be in there in my view, M3 engine, lots of CSL bits manual box, sports car, much better to drive than the z3m, criminally underated.

Sacrilege to think the E28 M5 didn't even make the list!
Yes I was surprised the E28 didn’t make the list too, great engine, handsome but low key looks, the essence of what M used to stand for?

I wonder how many of the votes for top spot were from people who have actually driven or owned the CSL. I appreciate it's a great car and the commitment from BMW to build such a machine. I think a lot the PH crowd will automatically just say 'CSL'. I've sat in one and it did feel special. But I'm not sure it's 5x more special than a standard well sorted car. I'm saying this as a standard manual car owner. I'm not sure I'd want to pay such a huge premium for what can't be much more car. Perhaps I need to have a go in one to see what all the fuss is about.

The other cars mentioned that are missing will be down to volume/reliability.

Everyone mentions their love for the E61 M5 but the reality is the gearbox scares people and I think a lot of owners will have seen trouble and big bills. There's a manual converted touring on CC at the moment already at strong money proving the gearbox weak point.

Maybe too old for some to remember - never had the following of the E30 M3

I wouldn’t disagree with the top three. A surprise though that there were not enough votes for the M635 or any of the other NA iterations of M5.
I agree age has probably got something to do with it .

Once you drive one, it all makes perfect sense.

Probably best you don’t, as you’ll never feel the same way about your own car again.
The CSL is so much more than the sum of its parts and its specs would suggest. It was peak BMW M division.
But ultimately if you’re a manual Luddite, you’ll never get the CSL and it’s SMG ‘box, but if you can and do embrace it, it’s one of the finest cars I’ve owned.

I would stick with the standard or CS version.

Once you drive a CSL you won’t think about anything else.

Manual purists will always moan about the gearbox but it’s very well known the SMG is suited to the noisy, angry CSL characteristics!

Well if you’re in or near the Midlands I’d appreciate a passenger ride!

Also appreciate that it being a limited model also justifies its premium.

Surprised the rare E36 GT not included. Enjoyed mine together with the slightly less rare E36 Imola Edition.

Archaic SMG gearbox would rule out the voted winner for me. That would go to the E46 'manuel'.

Miss my 2003 Estoril blue car to this day.

I just dont get it with these big barges that look the same, I only saw 5 different cars in that line-up! - E30 would be my pick (but there were even two of these!)

I used to think that about the SMG box, but driving one as intended and realising it is not an autobox changed my mind.

Quite a predictable result. Only one that I would have liked to have seen in there is the E60 M5 with that V10 engine.
It was booked in to appear, but sadly broke down on the way.
