RE: VW Golf GTI (Mk7) | Spotted

I would prefer the manual to a DSG, the borkage on the DQ250 is real and huge. Mine cost over £3.5k to put right when the selector tried to engage two gears at once. The car was always serviced at half the recommended times too. Apparently the DQ380 (7 speed) in the 7.5 is a bit better.
You can't really fault a mk7/7.5 GTI though, but you always wish you had just bought the R every time you pull out of a wet junction.

"Interior may need a dust", wants thirteen grand for it but leaves it looking less than clean ?
Saw a car the other day for 20 odd and it said "Few little scuffs, will probably polish out", so you want quite a lot of money but CBA getting the T Cut out ?
You see some with sandwich wrappers and bottles in the footwell, wouldnt go near a car where the owner thinks that acceptable, like selling your house with your underpants sunny side up on the bedroom floor.

Yes, the interior needs valeting to a good standard for this money. Someone may actually like the black wheels, but if it doesn’t sell I would suggest swapping them for silver; you could even add a little to the asking price!Saw a car the other day for 20 odd and it said "Few little scuffs, will probably polish out", so you want quite a lot of money but CBA getting the T Cut out ?

The MK7 is very appealing. The shortlist for my wife's current car was a manual 3 dr MK7 GTi or the M240i (which we went for). Would have been very happy with either.
I don't think they are in quite as short supply as the article makes out. Quick search on AT shows that although manual 3 doors only account for c10% of MK7 GTis for sale, there's still plenty to choose from. You don't need one with black wheels and lights if it's not your thing.
Red with silver wheels and tartan seats for me.

On paper, the Mk7 Gti just isn't as good as some other hot hatches, but it just works so well. It can tick so many boxes and feels quicker than the 227bhp should offer. Good on fuel too when you need it to be. Struggling to know what to replce mine with even adding £15k to the budget. Mine is a manual PP which has been under a VW approved warranty it's entire life so feels really tight still. It's my 3rd Gti and unlikely to be the last. Oh, and just fitted Continental Sport Contact 7s to the front. They give sooo much more grip for those quick exits from a junction.
I have a well-specced 5-door DSG PP GTI with a stage 1 remap, and it is a very good all-rounder. I echo the sentiments of those saying it's hard to replace. However, I've had it 5 years now and I am getting the itch to change; I am just going to have to come to terms with the fact that whatever I change to IS going to be a compromise in some way or other.
It doesn't do anything perfectly but it does everything very well. As they say, jack of all trades, master of none - oftentimes better than a master of one.

They've never been for me either as you say.
I've always generally had a soft spot for cars with 3 doors and 3 pedals(I really liked my manual F56 3dr Cooper S for example), so I find it a bit sad that both 3 doors and 3 pedals are virtually dead now really.
I’m the same, perhaps it’s an age thing because Ford escorts/golf’s that were hot always made do without an extra set of doors. I’m sure it’s still a thing that a 3 door is more stiff/rigid etc, unless your on the school run who needs a 5 door hatch every day….
I love mine had it since 2016 can’t think of anything better to swap it for so I’ll probably keep it a long time. Mega spec I believe everything bar the pan roof getting on for 10k in options, wheels are a pita they need re doing for the 2nd time now and it’s expensive so I can understand why they get painted but they don’t look tight imo
Had one for a couple of years and just didn’t get what the hype was about. Felt ordinary to drive unless you drove like a lunatic. No real character like a my old Cooper S has in spades. The infotainment was rubbish, sometimes it wouldn’t come on. Other times it wouldn’t switch off when the car was locked. Various creeks and rattles. Didn’t miss it one bit when we moved it on.

I must admit it felt lacking compared to my mothers' F56 JCW, but it definitely excelled in other areas on the test drive. Just ticked over 7 years and 70K miles in our Mk7 GTi, 5 door, DSG. I would say without hesitation it’s the best all round car I’ve ever owned. Quick enough when you’re in the mood and the road conditions suit, quiet, comfortable, economical and relaxing when you just want to cruise home on the motorway at the end of a long day at work. Unlike the MK8 the interior is useable and well screwed together, and there’s room for 4 of us and a Golden Retriever in the boot. Apart from routine servicing, tyres and a new battery it’s cost us nothing to run either. It might be ‘just a Golf’ but for me it’s just a fantastic all rounder.
That said the only thing this one is missing for the full ‘avoid’ spec is gel number plates and a discarded vape canister on the centre console.

The Mk7.5 GTI has a 6 speed DSG, mine certainly did. It might just have been the PP and TCR that got the 7 speed? My Mk7.5 GTI DSG was a great all rounder, but also rather anodyne and fun less.
I will be having a look at the Mk8.5 when it's released, probably the Clubsport.
