There is an Audi R8 in my neighbourhood with such a set-up. It seems even more annoying than on the usual hatchbacks.

I'm not adverse to a nice exhaust note even if it's a little on the noisy side - I love the odd crackle on the over-run on my carb equipped car but I confess here I must be getting old* because some of the "pop pop bang bang" maps on cars local to me really should be called "cannon cannon grenade grenade" - they are absolutely insane noise level wise and the "yoofs" that drive around are constantly on and off the loud pedal to get their "pop pop bang bang" fix - there is no way they need to be that loud!!!!

  • Yeah I am getting old but these 3 or 4 pot cars never sounded good with a fart cannon on the back, now they are force fed they sound worse - just like a 1500 Midget never sounded good with a Peco system

Anybody who decats and puts on pops and bangs maps on cars should be fed to the lions at Whipsnade, and those driving the such modified cars can be given as play things to the chimps.

FYI, in every circumstance I've utilised a decat pipe, no increase in volume was experienced. On occasion, better mpg. My insurance co. have been made aware every time I've done this, and have no qualms about providing cover. I don't know why anyone would have such an adverse reaction to that particular mod given there's no visible or audible giveaway unless you're so bothered you go about looking under cars regularly.

I despise noisy maps with every atom of my soul, and agree with anything derogatory that anyone has to say about them. I like my performance cars to be as audibly discreet as possible, that obsession extends to exhaust and intake noise. I wish others would adopt that attitude.

Natural pops, bangs, and crackles as an unavoidable function of tuning something with an older/cruder fueling setup, or because you've got anti-lag, right and good.

Deliberately engineered-in pops, bangs, and crackles when the car would be perfectly capable of running/performing pretty much the same without them, bellendery.

Because you are increasing your tailpipe emissions and your car now also stinks, its also made your car not legal to be on the road, insurance companies should not be allowing decats at all if one is required for the mot.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/modifyi...

And any bellend with a pop and bang map fitted to their car should be shot repeatedly with blanks from close range.

Mine came back from being mapped a few years ago, having needed the map adjusted after changing the turbo. It's the guy I always use, best in the business for that particular model. However, it became apparent that it was making stupid and unwanted noises that weren't there before. I took it straight back. Tells you all you need to know that his response was to apologise and say he did it without thinking because that's what most people ask for!

I think it wont be long before the UK is similar to the US states that require diagnostic plug in to ensure no modifications have been done.
That said, these pop and bang remaps are just stupid. Its literally doing nothing other than making crazy noises.

A guy near me has an M5 with it and you can hear him from about 1/4 mile away at night he seems to want to stab the throttle and then let the bangs run for as long as he can too - tool.

I mistakenly thought he would see the ridiculousness of the object for what it was and identify the error of his thinking but apparently that was too obvious!

As usual the maniacal hand clappers fail to appreciate that this is the start of a slippery slope

In the US this has become common with tuners being charged thousands for selling car parts which could result in that car increasing its emissions it’s being outlawed and more alarmingly they are making it illegal to modify any car that has ever been used on the road which stops 99% of motorsport in its tracks

So don’t complain when all the parts you buy for your car have to come from the manufacturer or approved sources

You can continue your hand clapping and back slapping now

EGR and DPF work seems to be discouraged now. I asked when I had my van remapped and was advised against as in their opinion it is likely the MOT will soon be cracking down on these sorts of modifications.

I wouldn’t, they are not much louder, it’s not like a car swap. It also wouldn’t pop n bang as they close the injectors on over run.

A Ducati on loud high-quality exhausts sounds fantastic. With the right exhaust, louder vehuicles can sound ok, and the steady tone is plasent and doesnt make you jump. It's the ones with the pops and bangs, or the ones with an exhaust note so loud and raspy it hurts the ears (here's looking at you, early 2000's GSXR owners with stubby exhaust end-cans!) that are annoying.

Great news to get stupid loud exhausts and pop n bang off the roads but I fear it could be one step towards a TUV type situation where we cannot change anything.

I imagine this thread will find an echo chamber of agreement that no mods should be allowed but on a motorist enthusiasts forum it is surely a wider issue that risks us not being allowed to run other mods.

there is often a little rumble on the over-run where the PAIR system is working, but it's subtle an can only really be heard by the person riding. My FZ1 does this, but people riding with me cant really hear it. It's inaudible with a baffle in the exhaust.

Must admit I avoid Wilmslow / Alderley edge now when out for a Sunday drive in the 355.
I heard they have sound meters now. Not worth messing about so I go up towards Forest of Bowland instead of the peaks.
Seems less strict up there and IME the police up there are actually quite pro "car enthusiast" so long as you are not driving silly.
