German engineering.
Get it fixed as cheaply as possible then get shot of it.

I know this happens on Leons as well, most of that cost will be labour as the part isn't that expensive.

There's a way to do it from the glovebox that cuts the labour time down which may be the same on Golf.

If you are handy with spanners may be a route to DIY, check some golf forums for advice

Does anyone know what year VW started adding silica to the coolant tank?

My wife brought a 2010 Golf privately. It had VW history and she maintained the VW history. A few weeks after a service an EGR issue appeared, due to the history of it being maintained by VW and this being a known fault, after escalating this with VW, I was offered a few options and our chosen one was to have the dealer labour costs covered by VW and we simply paid for the part.
Still cost us £650 IIRC but it would have been double that or more if we had to pay for it all ourselves.

So I would suggest you speak with VW themselves and see what they can offer you.

You won’t get anywhere contacting VW and, as you have found out, WARRANTIES are not worth the paper they are written on. I’d just swallow the grand hit and get it fixed.
I’ve had an extended ŠKODA Warranty since year 4 ( car now 8 years old ) and so far I’m about 3.5k up on claims from my extended warranty so your blanket statement is a load of rubbish.
OP has a Vertu warranty though, not a VAG one.

Having said that, the Inchcape VW dealer we use said the warranty they use for non-approved used are more co-operative than the VAG Approved Used one - think it was run by Car Care Plan.

so I've found a local garage with very good reviews , looking at £395 ( assuming that fixes it once and for all ) cant argue with that. As some have said i doubt they'll be much point moaning to VW about a 9 year old car..

anyway thanks for everyone's thoughts, cheers

I read stuff like this and then they go and buy another VAG dustbin. At least the people who repeatedly subject themselves to Land Rover quality and service get to drive a Range Rover for their trouble, VAG customers go through the same to have vinyl seats, crap ride, and a four banger diesel engine hehe

"They said" of course they did, to get you to buy it.

Shouldn't really allow the warranty company to tell you ahead of time what the fault is.

Check with them, if the fault isn't the split bag but just some other heater matrix issue would it then be covered? And if so can you claim once it has been investigated by the mechanic.

Well I have another full year of warranty so that will make the car 9 years old. Luckily I have plenty of cash in the bank so no worries if anything goes wrong hehe

I'd rather spend my money on something else rather than continually fixing a shoddy product.

Well, no - it was the service manager telling me this - we had a Tiguan bought new and were discussing the VW All In warranty.
