Looks quite nice to my eyes. I get the observations that it looks like a 911, but it also seems like a reasonable evolution of the previous AMG GT to be its own thing. I'd rather have something a bit more raw, but for those wanting a civilised sports car it looks good.

I'd also like to add that I don't think I've ever enjoyed a Nic Cackett article before, but this writing seems a lot more digestible than anything of his I've read previously. Kudos for that! I know he's not writing for my enjoyment alone, but I do feel it's only right that having being a vocal critic of his before that I acknowledge this one is more enjoyable.

Black wheels help keep ones eye on the overall silhouette.

Personally I would class them as vaguely familiar in some aspects (around the rear maybe?) but proportionally, I don't think they're interchangeable mostly due to their respective engine layouts.

The singular thing that allowed the original to stand apart - the proportions - gone
Legislation has killed the character/voice
Marketing and profit driving added (considerable) weight (will be interesting to see if this converts to sales performance)
An interior to genuinely feel sad about - again in terms of character and individuality

I'm not feeling the positivity that comes from this review at all.
I feel really sad.

In summary, Mercedes axing character, sometimes by rule of law, but mostly by choice.

Anyone seen the new 2 litre hybrid C63 yet? Thought not.
Old GT was a fantastic thing, this is just the bloated new SL with a bit of 992 roof nailed on the top.

The comparisons with the 992 are quite overblown, the rear 3/4 panel and rear quarter window look similar and that's were it stops, one looks like a 911 the other a stretched previous gen AMG GT.

The front end of the merc looks remarkably similar to the new Vantage but as they share the same engine and cooling needs that's not too surprising.

Other than a huge discount or "cheap" lease deal I cannot see why anyone would pick the Merc over the rivals, 992 4GTS will do everything the Merc can for £40k less, the Turbo S turn that to 11 for a little more, the Vantage beats the Merc hollow on desirability/interior and has more fire power (not that its needed) so I do wonder if they have another AMG damp squib like the invisible C63 SE performance+ thing that no one wants to buy...

A fat (2 tonnes FFS) ugly knock off of a 911…….. no thanks.
Agreed! This is far too heavy.

I loved the previous car (particularly the AMG GTR), but this doesn't have the same appeal at all - too heavy, and too many design choices to provide additional comfort that ruin it's sportscar credentials.

Will the AMG GT63S have the poke to compete with the 992 Turbo S I wonder??? Thats probably worth waiting for.

Me three!

Any idea where they're taken? Assume Lake District? Almost makes me want to take the day off and drive there for lunch!

Agreed, lovely pics. 2/16 looks like the northbound road into Glencoe. Will happily stand corrected if someone else knows better.

I really like it.

Certainly find it better looking than the Porsche 911.

I think it’s a good potential option for anyone at that end of the market.

The biggest thing I think the Merc has going for it is that all versions are big money and so offer a certain status that is more appealing to demographics outside PH. Porsche doesn’t really offer that anymore with 99% of people just thinking your £180k+ Turbo S is a normal Boxster or 911 Carrera.

Definitely Glencoe, know the area well, bit on the B863 down by Loch Leven. then at the Three Sisters Viewpoint for the still shots. Midge season incoming!

were you all expecting it to be light? or any other new car? or can we just except that we wont be getting any light weight mass production cars in the near future however much we moan on forums (genuine question)

Looks quite nice externally but think I prefer previous. Internally is awful, much less luxurious and roomy than previous generations and is something you'd find in a Kia.

While I’d most people outside Porsche demographics have no idea of the hierarchy but Porsche, high end Mercs and BMW’s are simply presumed to be expensive. My OH would have no idea how much the GT is… certainly wouldn’t think it anywhere near £180k.

Love the Glencoe backdrop. The car doesn't quite match the scenery.

1. As ever, I don't like the black wheels. They are vulgar. The car would look much more classy in silver alloys (maybe nick the ones from the pink BMW M3 convertible).
2. It's 911-esque from the rear and possibly rear 3/4, but nowhere else. The bonnet is far longer.
3. Lovely interior, let down by the iPad slab.
4. It's all very nice, but I'd rather have an Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

On dry tarmac, its limits seem unsurprisingly distant given Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 rubber and the prodigious level of tech underwriting them, although Sport+ (and Race beyond) reveal what’s possible with even more hydraulic restraint applied to abrupt changes of direction. While the result is a bit too unremittingly for choppy B roads and short on nuance, it is worth noting that even at Defcon 5 the GT doesn’t entirely sacrifice its hard-won poise or its easy-to-like charm.

I also prefer the previous gen as well(lighter/better looking to my eyes/only 2 seats making it feel more special). Plus cars like this(and the 911) may as well be 2 seaters anyway for what use the rear seats are for me.

Yep, super lazy designing from the crowd responsible for interior car design at Mercedes, just looks cheap. Not what I would want on my £160k GT!!!!

Tesla did it nearly 10 years ago on the first Model S, as this Mercedes playing catch up....
