It always concerned my how other people can apply for the log book. I read about people doing it for 'abandoned' cars - regardless of whether you think it to be abandoned, it isn't your car! Appreciate this case is different, but the fact is that it's a gaping security hole.

I hope that justice prevails.
Yep, not helped by the V5 'generally' being accepted as proof of ownership, except legally it's nothing of the sort. Leaves so many routes for fraud.

After all, how many people actually cross reference VIN with V5 for example?

I'm surprised nobody has yet pointe out the Ferrari owner could forfeit the plate for incorrect spacing yet.
It was pointed out on the original post and the reason it was placed in the crappy thread and not the good thread.

I won't go into details but it's way to easy to nick a plate.

DVLA have a fraud dept that deal with stuff like this. It may take a few months but they will sort it.
Agreed. I had the misfortune to buy a fairly expensive plate that had been misappropriated, and DVLA recovered it for its rightful owner about a year or so later (even though it had been assigned and put back onto a fresh retention cert).

Best thing about the experience was the treatment by the plate dealer it had been bought through. I have bought via them since and will do so again.

Quite a different outcome, I suspect, to how it could have turned out had it been eBay/private transaction.

I will not use a dealer for a personal plate, I simply go with the closest DVLA has to offer. I have seen so many plates being offered on multiple dealers sites, yet none of them own the right to sell it. Ripe for scams.

I have bought several from DVLA, and they are indeed very straightforward. However, if you're looking at previously issued plates you really can benefit from having a dealer involved. All of my money was returned (and very quickly). Not something that would have happened had I bought directly from the vendor.

The dealers do also tend to own some plates themselves, but you are correct that in many cases they are simply acting as agent and handling the actual transfer.

I wonder how long it will take for word to get around to the Ferrari owner? Could turn out to be an expensive conversation for him.

Should the identity of the cloned/stolen plate and legal actions to recover it really be posted on a public forum

Might not it be best to remove posts identifying the registration mark

I have found the letter I got from DVLA about mine. It has an email address and phone number if helpful? (your profile doesn’t seem to allow PMs, but feel free to message me and I’ll send).

I must admit, all of my cherished plates have no relation to my name nor cars.
