I like it in this colour and spec, and if it wasn’t for the range, I would consider one as a used purchase in 18-24 months to replace my RS4.

200 miles is crap for a car like this in my opinion. Our model 3 has a similar range, which is fine for its use case, but becomes a bit of a pain for longer trips. I’m sure it will only be a few years until Audi or BMW produce a 300 mile estate.

Something needs to happen with EV pricing, however powerful they’re still heavily compromised (pun intended!) and residuals are showing that, £100k before options is an incredible sum. Much like the iX these might get some company car exec sales while it fills a niche but that’s about it.

Article mentions the 5 GT, the design of this generation reminds me of it, with its ungainly high sides and blocky front, not good.

Me neither. Can't bear all the screens & info overload. No need.

It is getting a bit ridiculous though how the length of these vehicles makes them S class/7 series like in length (over 5 metres).

277 ~ 310 miles range is not good when considering my just 12 month old 530d pops up a dash advice of 570+ range each time I fill it up. Last year I did a 3 week euro trip with 8 passes thrown in and covered 2495 miles, averaged 43.77 mpg with the fuel cost being £386 why would I want to change to EV? This M60 EV will no doubt be a great car but the price when options are ticked will ensure there is even better competition some of which is probably at less cost......Nah Thankyou I'll keep my diesel.
Good decision, couldn’t agree more beer

Love a fast estate as much as the next bloke but I don't get it.... confused 100k+ with options for a 2.4 tonne electronically limited and tagged BMW 5-series EV that does barely over 200 miles real world with even worse towing range.Save yourself 60k and do the planet a favour and buy a nice used two year old specc'd up 530d.

An estate EV would be a potential next buy if only they weren't all a small fortune.
What EV estates are on the horizon that are <£50k... VW ID7 and that's it?

Ugly, soulless and only a fool would pay above £100k as electric cars are becoming one of the biggest swindles of the 21st century. If the deluded really want an EV they might as well go down the route of one of the Chinese knock-off brands that are available for a fraction of the price because after five years they will all be worth scrap money.
As for BMW, they have lost it now in a similar way to Mercedes. Ugly, ridiculously priced and with quality and engineering not noticeably any better than the mainstream brands.
If you want a good quality, economical wagon, buy a nice F10 530d and save yourself £90,000. You will also be reducing the carbon footprint by stopping another heavy and needlessly complex lithium battery powered car being brought onto the planet that will be just junk in five years time.
“Junk in 5 years”….. blabla
Educate yourself !

thumbup I couldn’t agree more. I had a G30 530d albeit in saloon form from 6 months old and it was a truly great car. I’ve got many fond memories of taking it into Europe (France and Spain) with the family.

The prices of late G30’s are understandable high and I’m sure you’ll covet yours for years to come. I can’t resist attaching a picture of mine (near the Pyrenees) that in some respects I do miss.

I like the looks but the face looks a bit manic, but the rest is good, pricing is well probably designed for the salary sacrifice market where they government pays 40% of the rental (an absurd situation) but it is a 600hp M lite 5 series touring so not sure how much people think it should cost, if it was 80k they'd still be complaining but the pricing structure is there to take advantage of government hand outs to people that don't need them.

As for the G30 530d, the G11 730d beats it hollow if you can get past the grilles.

Comparing a 530d to an M60 - really clap In other news, a 520d will travel further than an M5 tongue out
Other cheaper I5’s with more range and less performance are available !

The diesel Vs EV range thing is boring now. Not many people NEED 500+ miles of range, and when they do usually several rest stops are required, which when you drive an EV is when you charge it.

::Edit:;
2500 miles in my BMW iX costs me less than £40

The 1% of journeys still matter. The 5 series was one of the ultimate GTs. 930 yesterday morning we were in Lagos, Western Algarve. Less than 9 hours later we arrived in Santander, about 1100km away - about 650 miles I think. We left on a part filled tank and stopped twice for fuel and the dog’s needs, in a 3.3 litre petrol car with a 350 mile range at best. I can drive until the fuel light comes on and then stop when I’m on fumes and refuel at the next junction in minutes. That can’t yet be done with electricity - I’ve tried it. You need 10% left for the ‘just in case’ scenario and you can’t charge over 80% because it’ll take all day. For the other 99% of trips electricity makes total sense but I can’t see this thing on my drive anytime soon - 100 grand and regular doorstep jet washes to clear up the puke from when you step out of your front door in the morning and catch sight of it. RIP E39.

This review is somewhat at odds with the one done by Harry Metcalfe. He trashed the car, doling out special criticism for the interior (cheap).

I’ve got a G31 540i Touring. Think I’ll keep it…

I was quite interested until I saw it was £100k ridiculous. Also it’s amazing that given Germany buys estates more than saloons the previous generation M5 wasn’t available as an estate. It would have sold like hotcakes (here too).

Here are the benefits of this i5 over the 540 you mentioned:
-> The i5 M60 has more power, so is quicker to 60mph by about one second.
-> It’s electric, so drives much smoother & quieter with instant power delivery and no lag.
-> On the pollution side - the car requires some more pollution at the point of building it, but then has zero emissions at the point of use.
-> Next gen tech - lager infotainment screen, more app functions (pre-heat/cool)

If you drove an i5 M60 and then went back to your fuel powered 540i you would absolutely know the difference smile

Given the market dynamics over the coming years, with a flood of new EVs hitting the market, and manufacturers needing to sell an ever increasing proportion of their cars as EVs or else pay heft fines, against a backdrop of increasing consumer resistance to these sorts of cars at these prices, it's hard not see anything but massive depreciation on cars such as this which even now looks a bit behind the curve on range and efficiency.

You used to see cars ( admittedly unloved big Alfas ) depreciate 70% or more in the first 3 years. I think those days are coming back and that this will be one of them....

Harry is anti-EV biased.
He trashed the i5 infotainment and screen display, yet praised the exact same screen and infotainment in his recent M2 video argue
