thanks for your opinion. but it is nothing that an evo road test wouldn't have given.
That said, i bet the audi sales people love messers like you (unless you are seriously considering buying one - which going by the tone of your closing comments i suspect not!)

Is that the most useful thing you could think of to write Greg, someone comes to the forum and gives their thoughts and opinions of a new car they've driven and this is the response they get, poor show. That said, i bet the audi sales people love messers like you (unless you are seriously considering buying one - which going by the tone of your closing comments i suspect not!)

Go easy on Carlos - he had the opportunity to drive an RS6, and told us about it?! That's what's great about PH!

I agree with Tony on this, stop sI'm very jealous

Has no-one here ever killed some free time by visiting stealers and taking the test drives if offered?

Maybe i should have padded out my initial response a bit more but i am busy atm.
my sentiments are the same, it is a personal bugbear of mine when people test pilot cars they have no intention of buying and as stated previously, the sales staff must get royally hacked off with it.
If he had driven a mates car and reported back on it here then brilliant and i would have been all ears (ie. if the owner was cool about the test drive) but messing salesmen around is just not on and smacks of desperation/ego boosting.
To answer a couple of comments.
a) no, i am most certainly not jealous.
b) no, i never have test driven a car for the hell of it, nor would i dream of it.

....there's nothing wrong with taking an interest in cars and taking one for a spin if the dealer will let you. I test drove a 350z and mazda rx8 in 2003 just to see what they were like. On what i could remember and on what my wife also liked, 1 year later we bought an RX8 ......the test drives were useful.

Nothing wrong with test driving cars you are not currently in a position to buy. Who knows where it may lead in the future?
I once 'wasted' my local BMW dealers time by taking for a test drive a car I couldn't possibly afford to buy but simply wanted a go in. I loved the car.
Since then, I've purchased my own BMW and the local dealer has pocketed more than £10k worth of warranty/servicing/repair work from me. I suspect the margin on service is such that it's generated them more profit than had I bought my car brand new from them.
Bet they don't regret letting me test pilot for half an hour now, do they?
How do you know what you wish to buy next or aspire to own if you've not tried it?

Timewasters are timewaters. It's the same principle.
The test drove I took introduced me to how great BMW's are. There are now 3 in the household, all serviced at that dealer, and I suspect my next car will be sourced through them as an AUC..
Ok, arguably I might still have arrived at the same position had I not test driven one years ago, but either way..

but for every 1 of you, i am sure that there are 20 dreamers who shuffle off back round the corner to their 10 year old corsa full of stories to tell their mates about their half hour in an M3.
test drives are appropriate of the last 2 or 3 cars on your shortlist to get a feel for them, i struggle to see how the drive of a car other than the exact model you would like to purchase is in any way illuminating. except, possibly, at a push, a little bit if they didn't have the exact combo in stock so you drove the engine in 1 range and the chassis and interior of another. That i could understand.
It just boggles the mind that people spend their free time driving cars that they are not going to buy. just out of nosyness. It reminds me about the thread where renault were giving 24 hour test drives on laguna's and all the idiots were reporting back here how they were taking them out for a drive??????? why!
Maybe it is just me.

I had a Laguna for the weekend as well. Why? I like cars. Driving them is enjoyable, and driving many cars increases you appreciation for the better ones. It isn't always good for the manufacturers - unfortunately as a result of the Renault weekend I now know my next car won't be a Renault. Nor the one after that.
I see so many people on this forum and people I talk to that buy cars, keep them 5 minutes and change them becuase they've no idea what they want. As a result of making sure I get a drive in the sorts of cars I feel I may be interested in, when I do buy, I buy something I genuinelly like, genuinelly suits me, and can be kept for a number of years.
Driving lots of cars gives you a far better appreciation of what is good and what is bad about cars and makes picking the absolute right car for you far easier. How many people buy a Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 and love it, even though its a hateful box of ****? Lots. Why? Becuase they've driven sod all else. If you walked everywhere and somebody said 'Try this cheap Chinese monkeybike' you'd think that was awesome, too...
I get people 'waste my time' at work as well (I also work in sales) and frankly it doesn't bother me. So they take up half an hour of my time asking inane stupid questions then clear off and don't buy something. Never mind, the next guy might, or in 2 years time they might remember how helpful I am and come back and buy from the company..
It's a long term thing. Unfortunately, many are rather too short sighted to appreciate it.

Agreed about the rest, but in that case it was Renault itself offering the cars.None of the dealers time was wasted as far as I know, so they weren't interrupted from earning a crust.
The Laguna thing was an upscale equivalent to taking free samples in a supermarket IMO.

So your saying that if you are truly passionate about cars and you had the chance to drive lets say a lambo or ferrari for the sake of argument, that you would turn down a test drive for sake of offending the salesman!!Maybe it is just me.
Greg
Sod that! It might be the only chance to drive a car of that calibre and it would make me very very very happy, if thats terrible then so be it I will be going to hell! but at least I would have enjoyed myself.
If I had the chance to drive cars of that sort of standard I would jump at the chance and feel bad for the salesman later....
I must admit I've never actually test driven something so ridiculously out of reach there is no chance of me being in a position of owning one within the next few years.
Perhaps thats why I think 'test drives' are acceptable and others don't?
I've never tried it on a local Ferrari dealership for example.
