Beginners Rear Wheel Drive Car
Discussion
RWD cars aren't that scary, lots of people buy BMWs/Mercs/Porsches for the badge and don't really care about driving yet manage to get around without dying.
If you want a TVR get an S-series, they are far cooler than an MX5 and insurable for a 22 year old.

Why is there so much mystique attached to rear wheel drive cars? I can understand it with something with a few hundred BHP but unless you're stupidly heavy-footed you're unlikely to get in any trouble with a 'normal' RWD car, aren't you?
I don't know. There's nothing difficult about driving any road car in any way, shape or form, unless they're crap.An older 911 being the only exception, of course.
I had a 200sx s14a for 4yrs before getting my cerbera & i still miss it.
It was tuned to 250bhp & i found it a great entry into rwd & helped me practice havin lots of fun & the s13 200sx is even a good lookin car compared to the one i had.But as what has been said mx5 is a cheap entry into rwd but i prefer coupes for they are more solid feeling.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you buy an IQ over an Aygo?
I had an Aygo actually (not sure if that was a question or if you'd viewed my garage!)...If you don't mind me asking, why did you buy an IQ over an Aygo?
Have to say, it was a cracking car, lightweight, no power, only safety system was ABS, you could have a bucket load of fun with it. I just wanted something a bit more refined, I quite like my quirky, small cars. When the iQ came out I took one for a drive, going from an Aygo to an iQ is a massive leap in terms of equipment and refinement. The fact the road tax is free, it's a low insurance group (300 a year fully comp) and does 400+ odd miles to a 35 litre tank was an important factor.
I have to admit, I miss the "basic'ness" of the Aygo though, proves you don't need to go fast to have fun.

Knackered Datsun 120y (first car) on skinny remoulds plus a greasy road surface taught me one hell of a lesson one night! Ok, that was way back but it still sticks in my mind and really made me respect rwd.

They're quite a bit more expensive than the Aygo aren't they, despite having even less room inside?
I'm a couple of years younger than you but insure a 318is for 1400. I'm getting a 328 Sport next year with an LSD and that will be 900 to insure. These are E36 by the way.
Lovely to drive and easy to get used to. Having said that, I would probably get an MX5 having driven one if I didn't need the seats.
