It's one of the reasons my dad always has a normal car - it's just not worth the hassle.
Does he have enemies then? It is very rare for this kind of thing to happen, no way would I not have a nice car, just incase it happened.

Just don't keep the keys near any doors or windows, hide them under your pillow if need be!

Good point re preventing them taking your car.

A while ago - think when I was robbed some poor unfortunate PHer told his story think he had a Porche 911 and a 330d/i both fairly new.

They broke in the front door a number of huge men baseball bats and armed and started to come upstairs (he had kids & a wife) he thre both sets of keys to them to avoid the need for them to go any further. They went out - sadly the BMW didnt start it had a problem and they were right back in the house (guess assuming a fake key) 2nd time though it did start....

WHo cares what they take - in fact even if you got nothing back via INS safety is the most important thing & Im sure that guy realised there was no way he'd overpower them or not even worth the risk he would fail to let them near his wife & kids.

But it's only like £10k's worth of car? Nice car, but there are more valuable and easier cars to shift.
Its the violation too - even if it were my wifes £300 car breaking in to get that would be still highly gutting strangers uninvited strangers in your house while your asleep.

Weve been robbed twice once with us in the house - didnt wake us, the second while we were away. SO SO glad we were not there for the second they totally trashed the place kicking through (the wrong way) the hard wood door through the door frame.
I'd have barracaded us in the bedroom while calling the police & making as much noise as possible.

Solution I think is get a big dog. Even to a hardend robber the prospect of a loyal German shepard, Dolberman, English Bull dog, Rotweiler might make them think twice. Then again an alarm.

Not good to hear, hope it all gets sorted.

This sort of thing has been worrying me recently seeing as my 1st £10k+ car (Boxster) sits outside every night, the house 4 down from us had their TT stolen in the same way about 3 years ago. As someone pointed out, they can have the car if they must, its the intrusion and the thought of someone else rummaging around in my house.

Sleepless night tonight methinks, I live in Hornchurch which is the next town along from Upminster (which as far as Im aware is a fairly low-risk criminal area).

Thank you all for your messages. I really appreciate your support.
Police are still looking for the car but to be honest I doubt it will ever be found.
The robbery was clearly targeted to M5 - when the thief broke into the house, he took keys for two cars but only drove away M5 (guess he did not like Fiat van...) they also took a laptop, camera and £30 from my wallet.
It is a horrible feeling when one considers what might have happened if they came upstairs where we and kids were asleep...
Police were very quick to respond but forensics could not find fingerprints – seems the thieves were well prepared professionals.
Will keep you posted if anything comes up.
Cheers,
Vano

wkers.

I hope you dont get it back.

Start looking for similar cars for sale at top values and reject at least the first 2 offers from your insurance company out of hand.

They arrived in an e39 M5 missing a front bumper, which i assume was also stolen...

The two best solutions are a decent Tracking device for your cars and a good alarm system in your home which you set at night for downstairs. My personal favourite is this....which would neither upset the children or neighbours.

Any news from the police as to where the car may go, ie for parts or export?

I disagree. The south african method is much better. Stick a bottle of rum or vodka spiked with some form of unpleasant reasonably fast acting poison in the car. thick thieves will nick the car and then drink the booze. Cue dead thieves.

Yep, but you can get done for manslaughter now. I know a guy who did. In a country where one in three cars is stolen, there's not a hell of a lot you can do. Tungsten Carbide hacksaw goes through a steering or gearlock in 30 seconds. Only thing you can do is to have more anti-theft than the car next to you, but if your car is on 'order' over the border, consider it gone.
You can do like I did once.....chase one of my stolen work vans into a township only to realise that it doesn't help taking a 9mm into an area where the AK47 is now a 'traditional weapon'.

As i see it the law has to prove you poisoned them. Very hard to do when they A: Are dead and B: drinking from a bottle of whisky/rum etc they "claim" was in your car but doesnt have anything to link you to it in the form of fingerprints etc.

Law is a wonderful thing esp in the uk. Sa might be a little more tricky but not that bad.

If they drink a bottle of vodka/gin etc that had poison in it that was stolen from your car, how is it your fault that they drunk it? How can you possibly get arrested for that, you didn't ask them to steal your car or vodka, you certainly didn't make them drink it!

Believe it or not i suspect here in the uk they will try do you for it if there is a claim as the law protects the scum and prosecutes the innocent (yes i know if you poison someone you arent really innocent but i have no sympathy) . However they will have to prove you put it there and if there are no prints then they wont be able to.
