Correct. This is mainly in the snow belt, in places like Florida they're RWD, up north they're almost all AWDs, and yes, even the 7 series is sold with what they now call "Xdrive".

AWD has become very commonplace on luxury cars here, Mercedes are pretty much all 4matics, even the S classes, Cadillacs, Lincolns, etc.

Oh, and this is why... my Lexus GS350 AWD last week... before and after (All I did was shovel a path to the door and clear off the windshield to get it out). Over here 6" of snow overnight rarely closes schools and 2 feet of snow rarely keeps people away from work.

There was something in the press a few months ago that BMW are going to start importing 4WD 5 & 7 series into the UK to try and take on the Audi quattros.

About time too BMW. At the moment in the UK if you hate the VAG reliability your pretty much stuffed if you want a decent interior on a 4x4 chassis.

I've heard they're coming to the UK soon too - and I welcome it - but I'll believe it when I see it.

That's interesting. Are VAG car's less reliable than BMWs?

I used to own a 2003 330xi when I livedd in CT. I loved it, had a rare (in the US) MT (or stick shift as they call it). It was great in the winter, go anywhere within reason. But unlike the RWD version it was difficult to get sideways at all, it would just sick to corners until you were pressed up against the door window. BMW put a small drive shaft from the transmission back to the front wheels, I don't think it's a particularly "clever" system, and I was never sure how robust it was. I'm sure by now they've improved it. I'm not sure if I'd get another one, at least as a 3-series, I've done fine over the last 2 winters in the RWD S2000. A 4WD 5-series would tempt me though.

EDIT: Change my mind, that 3-series above is nice, I've got this thing for estate cars resently.

At BMW World in Munich they have a demo system showing how this system works, not sure it is particularly sophisticated but it does a 2wd vs 4wd demo & shows the handling differences.

My friends parents had a RHD E34 525Xi Touring (which may well actually be that one above seeing as it was that colour, with those wheels and in surrey). It took me years to work out what the X meant!

How is the 4x4 system on the BMWs rated?

There's always a lot of talk about other manufacturer's systems but I've not heard much about how the BMW method performs.

One of my in-laws has a 530xD touring, which is nice. ISTR that you can't get AWD with the twin-turbo diesel.

Cool! Just checked the Alpina German website to discover you can get the B3S Bi turbo model in estate or saloon form with 4WD too! 400BHP and 4WD!

...and the B7 comes in 4WD form too! 500BHP 7 series with 4WD.

BMW Germany also list 535d with 4wd in the new model.

So Audi do already have proper competition in the fast 4WD market, just not in the UK.

I test drove an E34 525ix a while back. From a garage in Tottenham. Smelled strongly of "jazz cigarettes". Make of that what you will.

Not *that* rare though.

BMW is the biggest selling 4x4 manufacturer in Europe, they even outsell Audi, well they did up until last time I looked a year or two back, probably still do but Audi have been doing well over the last year or two.

We don't get them here, anymore, as BMW UK decided after spending serious money in the 80's advertising BMW as The Ultimate Driving Machine, that offering 4 wheel drive versions would confuse the British public.
