So, are we correct in thinking they have moved into the country and think they now must have a 4x4?
My dad used to have a herd of cows and never needed one and I've been working on farms for all of the 20 years since leaving school and would rather my scrotum be stapled to a porcupine than drive/own the aforementioned pieces of S
t.
I sense some badge snobbery also, so my advice to you would be to recommend something that is both expensive and rubbish but with the right badge. Would an X3 fit the bill?

Fab car, really well made, fantastic spec and great looking.
Don't like the badge?
Simple, stick a different one on it

willy nilly etc..
why do they need a 4be4..feck knows.
i think they've got a bit older. it's snowed for two years and they think all of a sudden it's a necessity.
the daft thing is that they live on the edge of a small market town so don;t even need to be able to get out cos if it were that bad they could walk!
but no they haven;t just moved from the smoke. he's lived there for 20 years and she's lived there since time began.
anyone with a brain would buy 500quids worth of winter tyres but oh no lets buy one of these when we have two perfectly good (and expensive) cars.
rav4 is good idea. it might work.

Suzuki Jimny SZ4
My gran, (64) has just had a brand new one of these, has half leather and aircon, but nothing really in the way of toys. The 4 speed auto is surprisingly good and very smooth and despite being a 1.3 it gets off the mark quickly. £12K on the road, so get change from the cars you mention I would think.

so what else is there other than the freelander?
Subaru Forester? Bit basic inside but supposedly bombproof and seem to have a decent image with proper farmer/country types.briSk said:
i think something like the Tiguan is most appropriate.
Suggesting don't buy a Land Rover buy a Tiguan is, arguably, moving from one set of badge hype (or whatever you might call it) to a different, German set - when I looked at the Tiguan last week it was a huge disappointment in terms of build and feel.paddyhasneeds said:

if they want something a bit more 'offroadery' then something like the rav4 is a better bet. anyone know when it's due for replacement/restyle etc..??
thanks all.
busy at work so not getting on here much but i appreciate your thoughts...

Here's my tip when 'helping' relatives choose a car - let them have what they want and it won't be your fault for three years if they subsequently don't like it!
FL2 is great car now and Broadspeed are doing some decent deals on them via your local dealer from £22k brand new.
This get brochures for other odd possibilities like the Nissan Juke, or Skoda Yeti but let them choose, not only will it be your fault when they hate it it will be your fault when anything goes wrong with it, headlamp bulb goes and PITA to fix, your fault the other consideration is dealer location as if the dealer is 30miles away servicing and general maintenance at the dealers is a PITA.FL2 is great car now and Broadspeed are doing some decent deals on them via your local dealer from £22k brand new.
Don't forget a 4x4 and by that I mean an SUV type that most none petrol heads think of when 4x4 is mentioned have a more upright driving position, it could be they just want a big comfortable safe car that will see them till they stop driving. After retirement age their priorities may shift to getting a car that won't look old and cheap in 6years when they are still driving it.
