Thanks for all the replies guys, I guess I'm leaning toward the Falkens at the moment, as the MR2 is a little on the heavy side in comparison.

Reviews here look pretty decent too read :

I found www.tyre-shopper.co.uk the cheapest for mine. £360 for 4 x 205/45/17 fitted.

I had those Falkens on my Alfa 156 and I was really impressed by them. Probably the best-value tyre I've ever bought.

I'm happy with the FK452s I'm running on the Alfa at the moment, although wet weather grip could be a little more confidence inspiring. Can't comment on the Toyos unfortunately.

Cheers.
I should have mentioned that I run 452s on my Golf and am quietly hoping you'll choose the T1s so that you can give me a review of those on the MR2 so that I can consider them for the MX5.

But don't let that swing your choice. biggrin

Never had a set of T1 R's. I had a set of the T1 S and found the side walls shocking a too soft.

I have heard the R's have improved.

As for the Falken's I have had a set of 452 and the 912's and they are great value for money. Life on them are great too.

Put Toyo's on my Griff, they were really good. Binned the runflats off the BMW & replaced with Toyo's- much better ride & handling. Just put some Falken 452s on the rear & they seem better still.

Got a set of Toyos on the front of my Fiesta ST. People are right in saying they are worse than awful in the snow.
Wet grip is better than the previous Pirrelli P-zero Neros'. Side wall maybe a little softer than I would have wanted but all in all a very good tyre. Nice and responsive and a good feel for the price. I think they do better on front wheel drives than rears. Most negative complaints come from rear wheel drivers. Perhaps that will answer your question?

On the other hand, they are well liked on MX-5s.

I think they work better on light cars.

On my old Tub, I used to swear by Falken FK451's...they just felt right for the car.
When the 452 replaced them, I tried them, but prefered the 451's. Tried a few others, eagle f1's, but none felt the same.

I've run both on my TVRs, now running BF Goodrich G-Force profilers on my T350 and find them better than either of the previous makes.

looks as if toyo's are the Marmite tyre

I love them on my monster ,put the power down really well
better ,more direct than the F1's I used to use, steering wise ,which seems to point to a stiffer sidewall...????
great in the wet, 160 mph through puddles at bruntingthorpe with no probs....
good wear 16k on the front of a 500 hp fwd is not too shabby

but it all depends on the size and application

I did a season's sprinting with an MR2 (non-turbo) on T1-Rs last year (shared car, so 2 people, 10 events). In the absence of anything better I'm probably going to get another set for this year. Nice and progressive on the limit. Not sure what all this 'soft sidewall' stuff is about -- we ended up running 30/35 psi which I think is standard and although we wore away most of the sidewall lettering everything was OK. Tried higher pressures to stiffen up the sidewalls and it just made them break away earlier.

Mine are 225/40 18's. Car lost it's sharpness on toyo's ( I know it's a mk4 golf but it's not standard. ) completely, no confidence to press on. They have improved with wear but waiting until a tyre is down to the wear markers before it's any good doesn't work for me.

I had an MR2 turbo for a few years and ran Kuhmo KU31's. Now run them on the Ferrari and the M3.
My mate runs 452's on his Tuscan and thinks they're also v good.
Others here run T1-Rs and rate them.

If someone posts up some empirical research they've undertaken, based on R&D budgets, tyre compound analysis, noise and wear rates then you can have an informed debate, otherwise you'll get the same reply if you pop down to your local boozer with about the same level accuracy. Pirelli, Bridgestone, Toyo, Falken and Kuhmo all make good and bad tyres and all sponsor various race series so have plenty of history and testing grounds. I've run Pirelli, Falken, Contis, Kuhmos and Bridgestone and there's very little to choose between them. Honestly.

If we're getting down to brass tacks, either of the tyres you mentioned will be more than adequate on the MR2. You're only going to notice a real difference if you go genuine budget (Nankang etc) or high end track tyre (R888 etc). On your car, I'd personally avoid anything with massive grip at the back end as the last thing you want is for the back to suddenly release. Opt for something with reasonable grip levels and progressive release (which both will probably have).

Of they two you mentioned, get the one that's on the cheapest deal and spend the balance on getting the suspension and geometry set up correctly.

The Toyos are horrible on heavy cars. Had them on my Lancer, as they were the only tyre available locally in the 215-45-18 size. Made the car literally undriveable, it was squirming all over the road.

Just had both types on my Bora tdi, Falkens are good, both are good tyres but the Toyo's are alot better, and are v good in the wet, better wear characteristics also IMHO, but as said if there were a £10 price difference between the Flakens and the Toyos price I'd go for the better price, bit it would have to be about that much. I can get Toyo's for £70 at the moment, fitted and balanced.
