If he really is 101 then he's a real 'one-off' - to see him you might think he was 75 or so.

why would anybody smoke in a car like that
Um. Because they fancy a smoke? The only time I don't smoke in a car is when it's not mine.
I remember the top gear where Jay Kay was thrashing his Miura with a fag on. Good lad.

I think a different way of looking at it is some people just buy the car they like the look of. Just like buying a new sofa. They think 'oh that looks nice, do you have it in pink?' and then sign on the dotted line. Buying a car is only as complicated as you want to make it.

Many folk by the time they reach their 50s/60s often inherit from deceased parents, be it money, property or both and go out and buy a rockin good car.............because they can.

Once saw an elderly couple a few years back in a series 1 Escort RS Turbo - looked odd. And an old chap in York in a Belmont covered in 'Revs' stickers and lowered with big alloys.

My Grandad bought a flip-paint green Jag because my nan liked the colour.

If you don't have to worry about running costs, purchase price, speed etc then its no big deal to buy a car based on looks.

A male mate of mine bought a mini. He had no idea it was FWD. Just wanted to be part of the camp fashion show.
Doesn't know? Or simply doesn't care?

I suspect the majority of "normal" people never give it a second's thought, any more than you do about what gas is in your fridge.

Good to see rampant ageism coupled with a tub of assumption sired by prejudice. That Stirling Moss guy - bet he knows nothing because he looks old.

Old people buy what they think/ are told is best. Sad but true.
This.

They go for the highest spec model, and that generally turns out to be the sports model.

I remember seeing an old boy, must of been 90, driving a brand new focus RS when the latest ones came out in yeovil once.

One of my friends bought nearly brand new 2010 Astra VXR (ex-demo car, 900 miles on it) and didn't know it was turbocharged until I told him when we were out for a drive in it. You would assume that someone buying a sort of specialised vehicle (one of the hottest, lairiest FWD hatches of the current gen) would be interested and knowledgeable enough to know whether it had natural or forced induction, as it's quite important to the driving experience. To him, it was just a fast car.

There is an old fart near where I live that trundles about in a bright green Focus RS MK2.
