911 cab?

Smaller engine, but still a competitor to the Merc SL.
If he can find a good 996 turbo (although I think the cab would be over budget?) then that would certainly be on my list of possibles.

I have a massive soft spot for the SL55 though, having owned the E55 I just fell in love with the power delivery of that engine. Oh and the exhaust note on the SL - wow!

Don't expect to be able to go around corners very quickly though - the SL55 is even heavier than the E55.

If he's looking for a sporty drive, something fast in every type of weather, then the 996 turbo is the one. If a drag racing, (IMO) gorgeous looking and sounding convertable is what he wants, SL55 all the way.

I think he would regret not having an Sl55AMG if he can have one. Have driven a couple and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Just remember it may not look it but the SL is quicker 0-180mph than a Lambo Murcie.

Funny I just looked at SL500 on autotrader myself. Didn't realise that once 100k+ car can be had for 12-15k nowadays. Lovely cars those! However, For the same money I could get an Alfa spider that is 5 years younger anhd is only a tad slower... (I know the two cars are not directly comparable, but one could still come with a warranty and the other one as good as it is, will be rather dated)

edit: apologies. missread the title, you weren't talking about the 500 anyway smile

Quite like the idea of an SLK55 myself. 355bhp, sound like thunder, coupe and convertible in one. £30k gets you a nice example from MB with 12 months main dealer warranty.

While I'm not overly fussed about "image", can blokes get away with an SLK55? I prefer them over the SL55...

Never used to be a bug fan but liking 350Z's at the moment. That might fit the bill?

They are 2 totally different class of car.

One's a fast car which sounds great.

One's a fking monster that has enough torque to make the world spin faster!

I can only relate it to boxster S vs 911 turbo.

Basically he wants a 2 seated convertible. Not a 4 seated convertible?

An xkr?

Dean.
I also looked at XKRs, and cannot understand how a less powerful car wth a much worse reliability reputation and of the same age, can command a premium over the BMW M6.
Because it looks gorgeous and oozes the kind of class that the BMW can only dream of ?

Early Dodge Vipers sometimes fall under £30,000. Not going to find a soft top with a bigger engine much more easily than that

Can't think of a cabby to compete with the mercs at £30k so how about a 456?

He's halfway towards a 512! Num nums!

Or any SpeedSix TVR thats has been looked after properly so the car can be enjoyed as was intended - with a proper race tech derived engine (light, dry sump, low down and nice and far back behind the front axle) instead of a crude yank boat anchor perched on it ;-)
  • awaits the arrival of 300bhp/tonne and lots of abuse*

No, not used it properly yet! But I knew when I bought it that it would only be a short ownership, and it usually takes me 12months to decide on a car wink just something about the SLK55 that appeals....

....oh wait, its the V8 biggrin
