The Mondeo is suspiciously cheap for its age / spec. It is probably the best all round buy, but I'd want an AA check and all the rest to ease my mind.

Had a quick look for the Legacy - can't seem to find any for a similar price though.

Not at the top of my list as I think you may be right about that engine.

Would love the E39 but the Volvo is looking good.

As everyone else has said basically, between the e39 and V70. Drive both for sure. The V70 has the turning circle of well, a V70. Not even a boat can be compared to it. The seats more than make up for that though cloud9

The BM is of course at the different end of the spectrum to the V70 in a lot of ways. It's a 6' that is going to love to be revved when you want to. This is not to say the T5 won't rev, but it is a larger turbo engine so driving them is completely different. Also worth noting the obvious RWD of the BM.

I can't comment on the e39 seats, but it boils down to the classic line; "Drive em!" (if you can)

I have actually driven both models (not these ones mind you) and they are both good cars in their own way. I have always had BMWs but I know the Volvo is as strong as an ox also.

The 3.0D Vectra, isn't that the same engine as the Saab 9-5 that even Saab enthusiasts tell people to avoid?
Same engine, but has a different cooling system in the Vectra. In the Vectra, they rarely give trouble.

The 5 Seires would be my choice but as a unlisted car would be th Jag x-type estate V6. Similar to the mondy but with the added bonus of 4wd

If it were me, I'd go for the V70. If only for having something a little bit left field, and for the incredible seats.

I thought about suggesting the X type Estate but I think they would be out of budget. Out of the ones you have listed I'd go BMW or Volvo

X-Type a little over budget - good car though.

Vectra. I think its cracking value for money for a 5 year old car. Also nice low revs on the motorway for long high speed runs.

The Vectra is the newest and, although not a 'Preimium Brand' it would be great as a general use car - the engine concerns worry me though.

I'd be looking at Volvo, often the first and last word in fast estate cars!

Spoke with the chap regarding the Ford Mondeo V6 - seems a nice enough guy but there is only one receipt and stamp for the Service History which has put me off that one.

For me it would be the E39 followed by the T5.

If it's your wife's car, see what she'd prefer!
