just how fast is a cerbera 4.2
Discussion
I think by most peoples standards a 4.2 Cerbie is a bloody quick car, but as others have said, there are significant differences between cars, so you need to try a couple and buy the best maintained car you can.
These can be a real money pit if you buy a bad one - but likewise a good car can be great.

You're assuming that customer cars achieved the claimed figures...
There are definately well looked after cars that do make the sort of power TVR claimed, 4.5's tend to be more inconsistent in the power they create but this is due to engine mapping. I have a 4.2 and it's a very fast car compared the vast majority of other cars on the road, also I would like to add that I've never had my car on a dyno so I have no idea how much power it's creating.Silly quick is the answer, quicker than my Griff 4.3 was, comfortably quicker.
Putting a Cerb against the clock will *possibly* not show off what it's capable of - floor it in a 997 and you've got a space shuttles worth of computers behind you. In a TVR it's you and an engine. Plus the AJP throttles'n'stuff are tricky to set up right, so without a rolling road session beforehand, who knows?
I suspect a Stig or similar doing back-to-back runs in all the above cars would be the only way to show what a Cerbera is capable of.

Have a look at this site, you have to register to see the Cerb but it will give you a simple comparison.

I had a very early 4.2 with the clatter cams.
It made 343 bhp with 20000 miles on the clock and was looked after by Julian Lane(joospeed)
From memory I think that was fairly on the money.
Obviously not a really heavy car so very quick.
I'm pretty sure it would accelerate harder from 90-120 than 60-90.
I loved it but sadly wrote it off.

My 97 4.2 was half a car length infront of my mates m3 csl. Up to some high speeds when I gave in. The acceleration and noise are savage. Not progressive and driveable like the BMW. They demand skill and respect. They have a massive throtle travel but that's just to help you not kill your self.
On the road something like an M3 will see you down a road much faster than the Cerbera unless a very skilled driver.
Don't get me wrong though every time you get un a Cerbera it's an event. Even though it's fun every time you get in an m3 it's just a BMW. All be it a very very good one.

If I recall correctly, wasn't it the 4.5s which produced nowhere near the 420bhp figure TVR claimed? The 4.2s were fairly on the button with the 350bhp figure. I can't comment on the pace of a Cerbera; the closest car I've been in was a Tuscan 4.0S, which was by far and away the most stupendously quick car I've ever been in.

interesting replies thanks guys - interesting figures that a 997 was quicker.

Don't forget that the 997 is a car less than three years old with all the new fangled gadgetry and technology Porsche have developed in a huge number of customer road and race cars in a huge number of markets and racing series.west yorkshire mate
The Cerbera is from 1995!! You gotta love the fact that despite this, 16 years later, it is still spanking a lot of nice machinery!!
ETA It's fking fast too

fair enough, its his first 'decent car' the m coupe so i guess we will be going to shows together when the weather picks up but I don't want to be left behind
m coupe's are 320 brake though so they aren't shy.
No they certainly aren't shy, but the Cerb would win. The reason I used a Scooby as a comparison is because they are similar in performance to an M Coupe.m coupe's are 320 brake though so they aren't shy.
My suspicion is that that car was breathed on a bit to get it closer to the factory figures. But I can tell you that if mine was 350bhp. Another 70-100 would be very very quick. I've never driven anything els with an engine that pulled so hard up the revs. It really is like they just pulled the engine out if a race car and went that will do.
