Sorry guys - I found a little notebook I used at one time when I was a student, and in the back, I found a record of petrol use a liitle bit later, probably late 70's early 80s - and it was 32.5p per gallon (yes GALLON!).
You're either lying about your age or you weren't in England. Petrol was 33-35p per gallon when I passed my test in May 1973, in the summer or Autumn of that year there was a war in the middle east and we nearly ended up with petrol rationing, I still have the ration books that were issued, when supplies started flowing again it went up to about 50p per gallon by the end of the year and it never went down again.1.18ppl may of last year cheapest ive seen it since driving was 1.12ppl which was in july/august of last year. At least for me it has only gone up 20ppl so have'nt noticed a hugh difference in filling up it cost me i think around a fiver extra to fill my tank which is hardly breaking the bank. I bet it harder for people who have been driving for a while when petrol was half as much as now.
